Hannah Gutierrez-Reed<\/strong> found herself one of the most shocking film production tragedies in history. After serving as the armorer on Alec Baldwin<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s western movie Rust<\/em><\/a>, Gutierrez-Reed was sentenced to 18 months in prison for the involuntary manslaughter of late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins<\/strong><\/a>. Hannah\u2019s Father Is a Known Hollywood Armorer<\/h2>\n

Gutierrez-Reed is related to famed armorer Thell Reed<\/strong>, who has worked on several productions, including Once Upon a Time \u2026 in Hollywood, Miami Vice<\/em> and Mr. & Mrs. Smith<\/em>. In 1995, Thell spoke with Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/a> about how he instructed the cast of The<\/em> Quick and the Dead<\/em> with shooting techniques.<\/p>\n

\u201dI teach smoothness and style, and the speed comes by itself,\u201d he told the publication. \u201cIt\u2019s the ultimate dream movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another Production Reportedly Complained About Her<\/h2>\n

According to The Wrap<\/em><\/a>, key grip Stu Brumbaugh claimed that people on the set of The Old Way<\/em> complained about Gutierrez-Reed\u2019s inexperience when it came to gun safety. Per the former crew member, film star Nicolas Cage<\/strong><\/a> screamed at Gutierrez-Reed for firing a gun near the cast and crew members more than once.<\/p>\n

\u201cMake an announcement, you just blew my f**king eardrums out!\u201d Cage allegedly yelled, per the key grip. \u201cI told the AD, \u2018She needs to be let go,\u2019\u201d Brumbaugh explained, adding, \u201cAfter the second round, I was pissed off. We were moving too fast. She\u2019s a rookie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Rust\u2019 Was Hannah\u2019s Second Armorer Job<\/h2>\n

During an appearance on the \u201cVoices of the West\u201d podcast, Gutierrez-Reed opened up about working on The Old Way<\/em>, calling it a \u201cbadass way to start off\u201d her career as an armorer.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a really badass way to start off a really long and cool career,\u201d she explained. \u201cIt was also my first time being head armorer as well. I almost didn\u2019t take the job because I wasn\u2019t sure if I was ready. But doing it, like, it went really smoothly.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for what the \u201cscariest\u201d part of the job was for her, Gutierrez-Reed admitted that \u201cloading blanks\u201d was hard at first because \u201cI was like, \u2018oh, I don\u2019t know anything about it.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Hannah Was Charged With Involuntary Manslaughter<\/h2>\n

In October 2021, Hutchins \u2014 a cinematographer for Rust<\/em> \u2014 was accidentally shot and killed by a loaded prop gun fired by Baldwin while working on a scene. Although involuntary manslaughter charges were dismissed against the actor, the charges were reportedly refiled in January 2024 after a grand jury indicted him.<\/p>\n

As for Gutierrez-Reed, she was charged with involuntary manslaughter in 2023. At the time, attorney Jason Bowles noted that their legal team was \u201cexpecting the charges, but they\u2019re absolutely wrong as to Hannah \u2014 we expect that she will be found not guilty by a jury and she did not commit manslaughter [sic].\u201d<\/p>\n

She Was Sentenced to 18 Months in Prison<\/h2>\n

Gutierrez-Reed was sentenced to 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter. Per The New York Post<\/em><\/a>, New Mexico District Court Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer told her, \u201cI did not hear you take accountability,\u201d during her sentencing hearing in April 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou said you were sorry, but not you were sorry for what you did,\u201d the judge said, according to the outlet. \u201cIt was your attorney that had to tell the court you were remorseful. The word remorse, a deep regret coming from a sense of guilt for past wrongs, that\u2019s not you. \u2026 I find that what you did constitutes a serious violent offense. It was committed in a physically violent manner \u2026 I am sentencing you to 18 months of incarceration at a women\u2019s correctional facility in New Mexico.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
