{"id":224080,"date":"2024-04-15T20:18:11","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T20:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/15\/how-to-scale-ai-across-the-whole-company\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:18:36","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:18:36","slug":"how-to-scale-ai-across-the-whole-company","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/15\/how-to-scale-ai-across-the-whole-company\/","title":{"rendered":"How to scale AI across the whole company"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/53655172757_f80ffbd3d2_o-e1713210232600.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a year of dabbling, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/10\/30\/artificial-intelligence-ai-sanofi-insight-enterprises-ceo-initiative\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-d963e821-0 eclfSM  \">testing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/10\/30\/artificial-intelligence-ai-sanofi-insight-enterprises-ceo-initiative\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-d963e821-0 eclfSM  \">piloting<\/a>, or otherwise fiddling around with generative AI, companies are now ready to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/18\/dead-by-2030-embracing-ai-at-scale-mercer\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-d963e821-0 eclfSM  \">start<\/a> using it for real.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Earlier this month, a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/kpmg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-d963e821-0 eclfSM  \">KPMG<\/a> survey of 100 CEOs found that 39% expect to scale an AI pilot companywide this year. That number marks a big change from November, when just 14% of business leaders said their company was ready to use AI across the organization, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90981832\/every-company-has-an-ai-strategy-now-almost-no-ones-ready-to-implement-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-d963e821-0 eclfSM  \">Cisco survey<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, there are naturally a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/08\/10\/workday-data-ai-revolution\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-d963e821-0 eclfSM  \">technical challenges<\/a> that come with the company-wide adoption of one of the most cutting-edge technologies of the world. And once that gets ironed out, companies still have to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/01\/30\/europe-ai-readiness-training-workers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-d963e821-0 eclfSM  \">train<\/a> a possibly anxious workforce to use an AI tool some of them fear could take their job.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not the technology which is the problem, it\u2019s the scaling,\u201d said Amy Challen, Shell\u2019s global head of AI, at the Fortune Brainstorm AI conference in London<\/p>\n<p>Companies of all sizes\u2014from startups with a few early employees to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/ranking\/fortune500\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-d963e821-0 eclfSM  \">Fortune 500<\/a> giants with workforces that span the globe\u2014are grappling with how to use AI. The companies best poised to succeed in the AI world won\u2019t just be the new innovators that invented the technology but the existing firms that succeed in scaling it across their entire business, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/mckinsey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-d963e821-0 eclfSM  \">McKinsey<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/mckinsey-digital\/our-insights\/ten-unsung-digital-and-ai-ideas-shaping-business#innovators\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-d963e821-0 eclfSM  \">report<\/a> from January.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The risk of being left behind is too unpalatable for business leaders, and one mantra was clear as founders and tech executives discussed the topic onstage in London: companies have to pick the right uses for AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A shotgun approach that tries to use AI for everything won\u2019t work. In order to execute on that targeted approach, AI pilots can\u2019t be manned by IT teams alone. \u201cThe key for me is agile scaling where you always have a joint team,\u201d Challen said. \u201cIt\u2019s always a technical team, but also a business team. Never do data science without the business.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At Shell, AI is already being used for what Challen refers to as predictive maintenance, which lets the company forecast where and when its oil machinery might need repairs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For companies that know they\u2019ll use AI across virtually all aspects of their business, the challenge is getting their employees used to the feeling of being shadowed by AI, according to Sachin Dev Dugal, founder of the startup Builder.ai.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Builder.ai employees might have an AI assistant manage their calendar for them, while those in the sales department have one give them advice during calls with customers. That in particular took some getting used to because the idea of being listened to by an AI system was \u201cvery jarring,\u201d Dugal said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to get people comfortable with the fact that there\u2019s an AI on the call,\u201d he said during the panel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The panelists agreed companies shouldn\u2019t force AI down their employees\u2019 throats, especially if they\u2019re finding it hard to use. If companies are finding that a new AI tool\u2014whatever its specific use case might be\u2014isn\u2019t being used across the company, they should ask themselves why,\u00a0 Challen said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it\u2019s not being used, it\u2019s your problem\u2014it\u2019s not the user\u2019s problem,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Hesitant employees can be a significant hurdle for getting AI pilots implemented across the company. In general, workers are open to trying out AI, but doing so can lead to mixed results. Some find that it\u2019s undoubtedly a productivity booster, which tends to give them confidence going forward. By the same token, they\u2019re also well aware that AI seems able to do part of their own jobs, which can give employees pause about using the technology. A PwC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/issues\/c-suite-insights\/the-leadership-agenda\/who-is-afraid-of-ai-most-employees-arent.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-d963e821-0 eclfSM  \">survey<\/a> of 54,000 workers found that 13% of respondents had that fear. In fact, at least one study found employees who used AI more ended up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/12\/19\/the-more-workers-use-ai-the-more-they-worry-about-their-job-security.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-d963e821-0 eclfSM  \">being more fearful<\/a> that it would replace them in the workforce.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For now though, the most common refrain about AI in the workplace is that it will be a copilot to workers\u2019 everyday responsibilities. Major tech firms like <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/microsoft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-d963e821-0 eclfSM  \">Microsoft<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alphabet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-d963e821-0 eclfSM  \">Google<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/salesforce-com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-d963e821-0 eclfSM  \">Salesforce<\/a> have already started marketing many of their AI tools as productivity enhancers, framing them as the next evolution of the word processor or the spreadsheet. This time around though workers find that AI doesn\u2019t just help them with a task but does the whole thing for them.
