If you thought Barbie mania was over, think again. It has certainly not concluded for\u00a0Kraft Heinz Co.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nine months after the release of\u00a0Barbie<\/a><\/em>, which brought in more than\u00a0$1.4 billion to\u00a0become the highest-grossing film of 2023<\/a>, the food maker has partnered with\u00a0Mattel Inc.<\/a>\u00a0to produce \u201cBarbiecue\u201d sauce. The condiment is appropriately pink hued and emblazoned with the pony-tailed doll profile. If star Margot Robbie had worked a grill in the movie, the product would have had prime placement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Heinz is launching\u00a0Barbiecue, which is discretely labeled on the back of the squeezable bottle as \u201cHeinz Vegan\u00a0Mayo with BBQ Sauce,\u201d\u00a0in just two countries,\u00a0the UK and Spain.<\/p>\n

In the UK, it will be sold as a limited-edition offering, with 5,000 bottles available on\u00a0heinztohome.co.uk<\/a>\u00a0starting on Monday.\u00a0A further\u00a0limited run of the sauce will be sold nationwide at Tesco<\/a> supermarkets, from April 17,\u00a0and then on Ocado, the online UK delivery service, starting in mid-May. In total, Heinz is producing around 105,000 bottles for the UK. The suggested retail price is \u00a33.39 ($4.22)\u00a0for a 415 ml\u00a0squeeze bottle.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In Spain, around 12,000 bottles of the sauce\u00a0will be available nationally at 120 El Corte Ingl\u00e9s department stores, with some online giveaways, starting on April 25.<\/p>\n

Barbie merchandise has been flying off the shelf\u00a0since the movie\u2019s release\u00a0in July 2023.\u00a0Mattel\u2019s sales grew<\/a>\u00a0by 9.3% in\u00a0third-quarter 2023, to $1.92 billion, thanks in large part to\u00a0Barbie<\/em>. Additional\u00a0Barbiecore products such as\u00a0Gap hoodies and Crocs<\/a>\u00a0were snapped up, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOur relationship with Barbie started over a year ago, ahead of the movie launching,\u201d says Andre Fernandes, Kraft Heinz\u2019s vice president of Growth, Europe & Pacific Developed Markets. Big food companies aren\u2019t known for moving fast, however, so\u00a0it\u2019s only now, in\u00a0spring 2024 with\u00a0the film playing on airline\u00a0screens, that Heinz is releasing\u00a0Barbiecue.<\/p>\n

The company first gauged interest on social media in late summer, when\u00a0a Facebook UK post<\/a>\u00a0generated 464,000 likes and 71,000 comments.\u00a0\u201cOne fan even told us they\u2019d dye their hair pink if we brought Barbiecue\u00a0to life,\u201d says Fernandes.\u00a0That\u2019s when\u00a0Heinz decided to make the sauce a reality, at least for a short period. Product development took about six months.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The starting point for the recipe, according to\u00a0Fernandes,\u00a0comes from customers\u2019\u00a0habit of blending Heinz Classic BBQ sauce with the company\u2019s mayo; the color comes from what is certainly a hefty amount of beet root extract.\u00a0The result is exactly what you\u2019d expect: a\u00a0thick, gloppy spread that\u2019s almost the consistency of mayo, with a sweet faux-smoky flavor.<\/p>\n

The product is launching in the UK and Spain because that\u2019s where Heinz saw the strongest response from customers\u00a0following its\u00a0social media tease. Although there are currently no plans to sell\u00a0Barbiecue\u00a0in the US, says Fernandes, \u201cWe\u2019d never say never\u00a0to launching it\u00a0in other markets. We\u2019ve even had people from Australia asking for Barbiecue.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for other Barbie-themed products? \u201cWe\u2019d never rule out a Kenchup,\u201d Fernandes says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
