The past few years have shown just how misguided that relationship was, as Russia invaded Ukraine and cut off Germany\u2019s cheap, vital gas supply.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Now, one of Germany\u2019s leading renewable power bosses has suggested it\u2019s a mistake the country could rue forever, as the fallout from the energy crisis is set to permanently damage its industry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/5d98bcab-c8bc-49c8-83a0-88522194f64d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Speaking to the <em>Financial Times<\/em><\/a>, RWE boss Markus Krebber said gas prices in Germany were structurally higher than elsewhere in Europe thanks to the country\u2019s reliance on liquified natural gas imports.<\/p>\n<p>Germany imported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/how-did-germany-fare-without-russian-gas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">55% of its natural gas supply<\/a> from Russia when the country invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Russia was also Germany\u2019s primary source of oil and coal imports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The country has managed to shed most of its reliance on Russian gas. Germany cut its gas imports by 32.6% in 2023, the country\u2019s energy regulator said, mostly as a result of cutting out Russian supply.<\/p>\n<p>However, Germany is still heavily dependent on other countries for its energy supply, creating pricing issues for the embattled economy. The effects on German industry have been pronounced and, according to the RWE chief, are likely to be long-lasting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re going to see a bit of recovery, but I think we\u2019re going to see a significant structural demand destruction in the energy-intensive industries,\u201d Krebber told the <em>FT<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">German industry declines<\/h2>\n<p>Since Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, Germany has found itself in the unusual position of becoming the major laggard of Europe\u2019s stuttering economic engine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The country is <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/03\/18\/germany-faces-recession-and-an-economic-recovery-isnt-yet-in-sight\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">on the brink<\/a> of a technical recession after its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.destatis.de\/EN\/Press\/2024\/01\/PE24_019_811.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">economy contracted<\/a> 0.3% in 2023. The outlook for this year is bleak, with the German government <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/02\/21\/germany-economy-troubled-waters-slashes-growth-forecast-recession\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">slashing<\/a> its GDP growth forecast from 1.3% to 0.2% in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The former driver of its economic powerhouse, energy-intensive industry, has been sputtering since Russia\u2019s invasion and has turned into a serious thorn in the country\u2019s side.<\/p>\n<p>Germany\u2019s Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.spglobal.com\/Public\/Home\/PressRelease\/2845b8f17d6e4f1b9c243d55517c36cb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">construction sector<\/a> has been declining since early 2022. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.spglobal.com\/Public\/Home\/PressRelease\/7972e0a497e74a1da6dee3eac64671f8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Manufacturing<\/a>, meanwhile, has been in decline since mid-2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGermany\u2019s manufacturing sector has been mired in recession since around the middle of last year, and the latest PMI readings signal another contraction in the first quarter of 2024,\u201d Dr. Cyrus de la Rubia, chief economist at Hamburg Commercial Bank, wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo make things worse, the downturn is very broadly based, encompassing capital goods as well as intermediate and consumer goods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It has ignited debates around whether Germany can once again be considered the \u201csick man of Europe,\u201d having previously shaken off its post-Cold War title in the 1990s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Deutsche Bank CEO Christian Sewing <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2023\/09\/21\/deutsche-bank-ceo-christian-sewing-germany-sick-man-of-europe-structural-change\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">warned in September<\/a> that Germany could become the sick man of Europe, citing spiraling energy costs and a shortage of skilled workers as some of the obstacles facing the country\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>The boss of Germany\u2019s central bank, Bundesbank, was <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/03\/21\/bundesbank-president-recession-germany-sick-man-europe\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">forced to hit back<\/a> at this unfortunate moniker, arguing that Europe as a whole was at risk of \u201cgetting sick,\u201d rather than Germany in particular.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">German businesses taking flight<\/h2>\n<p>RWE is one of several German businesses that appear to have had enough of Germany\u2019s flatlining industry.<\/p>\n<p>Analysis by fDi Markets shows German companies <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/02\/19\/german-companies-pouring-record-investments-us-germany-tight-economic-relationship-china-wobbles\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">almost tripled their investments<\/a> in the U.S. in 2023 to $15.7 billion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The downturn of German industry was as much to blame for the flight of capital to the States and Joe Biden\u2019s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which offered strong subsidies to incoming businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Major carmakers like Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz upped their commitments in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>RWE, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwe.com\/en\/press\/rwe-ag\/2023-03-01-rwe-becomes-a-top-tier-renewable-energy-company-in-the-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">announced<\/a> a new U.S. arm called RWE Clean Energy after closing an acquisition for Con Edison Clean Energy Businesses.
