Here\u2019s who catches more z\u2019s than even CEOs, managers, and business owners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Being a chief executive officer comes with myriad benefits, such as a sizable base salary, travel perks, and\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/06\/28\/guide-to-better-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">more sleep<\/a>? CEOs are happier with the amount of sleep they get each night than directors, managers, employees in non-managerial positions, and even business owners, according to a new survey.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Consumer product testing company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expertreviews.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Expert Reviews<\/a> joined forces with market research firm <a href=\"https:\/\/today.yougov.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">YouGov<\/a> to survey nearly 4,300 adults throughout the U.K. in November 2023. The results of the inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expertreviews.co.uk\/bedroom\/75-facts-about-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Expert Reviews Sleep Survey<\/a> were published last month.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents were asked whether they agreed with the statement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datawrapper.de\/_\/nb1g2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">\u201cI get enough sleep.\u201d<\/a> Chairpersons were the only senior staffers to agree in a larger proportion than CEOs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chairperson: <\/strong>100%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chief executive: <\/strong>77%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Director: <\/strong>51%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Owner: <\/strong>45%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manager: <\/strong>40%<\/li>\n<li><strong>No management responsibility: <\/strong>38%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe aria-label=\"Column Chart\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-nb1g2\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"812\" loading=\"lazy\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/nb1g2\/4\/\" style=\"border:none\" title=\"JOB SENIORITY AND SLEEP ADEQUACY\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re somebody who\u2019s tired no matter how much sleep you get, then you want to measure your sleep with a sleep test,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.stanford.edu\/rafael-pelayo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Dr. Rafael Pelayo<\/a>, a clinical professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/sleepdivision.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Division of Sleep Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine<\/a>, tells <em>Fortune<\/em>. \u201cHowever, most people don\u2019t have sleep disorders that way, they just have lifestyles that don\u2019t give them enough hours of sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/sleep\/about_sleep\/how_much_sleep.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a> recommends at least seven hours of sleep nightly for adults ages 18\u201360. Those 61\u201364 should get seven to nine hours, while those 65 and older should get seven to eight hours. <a href=\"https:\/\/cdi.cdc.gov\/?location=US&amp;category=SLEP&amp;indicators=SLP03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Roughly one-third of U.S. adults<\/a> don\u2019t get enough sleep, 2022 CDC data show.<\/p>\n<p>Chairpersons were most likely to agree they got <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datawrapper.de\/_\/XcHRa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">at least seven hours of sleep<\/a> each night:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chairperson: <\/strong>77%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chief executive: <\/strong>70%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Director: <\/strong>66%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Owner: <\/strong>60%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manager: <\/strong>57%<\/li>\n<li><strong>No management responsibility: <\/strong>51%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe aria-label=\"Stacked Bars\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-XcHRa\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"580\" loading=\"lazy\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/XcHRa\/1\/\" style=\"border:none\" title=\"WHICH EMPLOYEES GET THE RECOMMENDED AMOUNT OF SLEEP?\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While not a scientific study, the Expert Reviews Sleep Survey claims to dispel the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/11\/09\/bryan-johnson-sleep-deprivation-elon-musk-bill-gates-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">stereotype that CEOs thrive on a few hours\u2019 sleep<\/a>. Yet the tide may already have been turning; a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/05\/27\/how-much-sleep-and-exercise-do-fortune-500-ceos-get\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">2022 poll of Fortune 500 CEOs<\/a> revealed these business leaders sleep an average of 6.3 hours a night.<\/p>\n<p>Job seniority also correlates to sleep quality, according to the published Expert Reviews survey and additional data the company provided to <em>Fortune<\/em>. The following percentages of employees ranked their quality of sleep \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cexcellent\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chairperson: <\/strong>82%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chief executive: <\/strong>74%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Director: <\/strong>58%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manager: <\/strong>39%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Owner:<\/strong> 35%<\/li>\n<li><strong>No management responsibility: href=\"https:\/\/www.datawrapper.de\/_\/3AK74\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">most likely to report napping<\/a> \u201cfairly often\u201d or \u201cvery often\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chief executive: <\/strong>48%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chairperson: <\/strong>41%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Director: <\/strong>24%<\/li>\n<li><strong>No management responsibility: <\/strong>12%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Owner:<\/strong> 10%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manager: <\/strong>9%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Naps can be good or bad, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelgrandner.com\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Michael Grandner, Ph.D.<\/a>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/psychiatry.arizona.edu\/research\/sleep-and-health-research-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Sleep and Health Research Program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine \u2013 Tucson<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA nap taken in order to boost energy and productivity can be a very effective way to reduce fatigue and improve mental and physical performance,\u201d Grandner tells <em>Fortune<\/em> via email. \u201cOn the other hand, naps taken because people can&#8217;t stay awake suggests that there may be some deficiency with their sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe aria-label=\"Grouped Columns\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-3AK74\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"571\" loading=\"lazy\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/3AK74\/1\/\" style=\"border:none\" title=\"JOB SENIORITY AND NAP FREQUENCY\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Expert Reviews didn\u2019t indicate what time of day respondents said they tend to nap. <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2024\/04\/07\/sleep-medicine-napping-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Another recent sleep survey<\/a>, conducted by sleep wellness company <a href=\"https:\/\/sleepdoctor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Sleep Doctor<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pollfish.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Pollfish<\/a>, found that 46% of U.S. workers nap during the workday at least a few times a year.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gen Z, millennials lose most sleep over work stress<\/h2>\n<p>While not all results from the Expert Reviews survey were stratified by job seniority, at least 40% of respondents in each age group reported that their work life interfered with their <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/02\/23\/healthy-sleep-habits-for-aging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">sleep hygiene<\/a>. Adults 18 and older were asked whether they agreed with the statement, \u201cMy job impacts my sleep quality\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>18\u201324: <\/strong>70%<\/li>\n<li><strong>25\u201334:<\/strong> 57%<\/li>\n<li><strong>35\u201344:<\/strong> 54%<\/li>\n<li><strong>45\u201354:<\/strong> 50%<\/li>\n<li><strong>55+: <\/strong>42%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Stressed-out employees should try structuring their nights as they do their workdays to bring a sense of calm into their bedtime routines, says <a href=\"https:\/\/sleepdoctor.com\/about\/dr-michael-breus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Michael Breus, Ph.D.<\/a>, a clinical psychologist and the founder of Sleep Doctor, who wasn\u2019t involved in the Expert Reviews survey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019ve got to do in society is teach people how to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/cortisol-how-to-lower-stress-hormone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">reduce their stress<\/a> in a healthy and effective way,\u201d Breus tells <em>Fortune<\/em>. \u201cLike exercise, sports, a book club, yoga, stretching\u2014I don\u2019t care what it is that helps you out, as long as it doesn\u2019t affect your sleep detrimentally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Breus adds, \u201cEverybody has really highly structured day time.
