{"id":222442,"date":"2024-04-10T16:51:57","date_gmt":"2024-04-10T16:51:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/10\/baltimores-fallen-port-will-be-operational-months-earlier-than-expected\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:18:53","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:18:53","slug":"baltimores-fallen-port-will-be-operational-months-earlier-than-expected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/10\/baltimores-fallen-port-will-be-operational-months-earlier-than-expected\/","title":{"rendered":"Baltimore\u2019s fallen port will be operational months earlier than expected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GettyImages-2115132792-e1712761930570.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the Francis Scott Key bridge collapsed into Baltimore Harbor on March 26 after being hit by a container ship, supply-chain operators feared the worst, including long delays costing billions as insurers sort out an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/30\/baltimore-bridge-collapse-economic-catastrophe-maryland-governor-wes-moore\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">economic catastrophe<\/a>\u201d that <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/03\/28\/baltimore-bridge-expected-to-trigger-one-of-the-largest-marine-losses-in-history-says-lloyds-of-london\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Lloyds CEO John Neal said<\/a> could be \u201cone of the largest marine losses in history.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>But three weeks later, work crews are setting ambitious timelines for reopening the port and mitigating some of the long-term economic damage of the disaster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impact of the bridge\u2019s collapse will not be as severe as first expected,\u201d Chris Rogers, head of supply chain research at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence, told <em>Fortune<\/em> in an email.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usace.army.mil\/Media\/News-Releases\/News-Release-Article-View\/Article\/3731723\/us-army-corps-of-engineers-develops-tentative-timeline-to-reopen-fort-mchenry-c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) is planning on dredging a new access channel<\/a> by the end of the month. At 35 feet deep, it will be big enough to fit some ships delivering containers and other vessels delivering cars and tractors. That\u2019s especially important because Baltimore is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/car-shipper-wallenius-wilhelmsen-sees-up-10-million-hit-baltimore-disaster-2024-04-03\/#:~:text=The%20Port%20of%20Baltimore%20ranks,the%20affected%20area%20have%20resumed.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">America\u2019s largest port for cars and farm machinery<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/2024\/03\/26\/supply-chains-already-feel-the-pinch-as-collapsed-bridge-blocks-baltimores-port\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">the ninth-largest in the country<\/a> by the value of imports it handles.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of May, the ACE expects to reopen the original, 50-foot-deep channel that\u2019s currently blocked by the wreckage of the Francis Scott Key bridge, which would allow marine traffic to continue as usual just two months after <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/26\/baltimore-bridge-collapse-francis-scott-key-hit-by-ship\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">the container ship <em>Dali<\/em> collided with the bridge on March 26, sending it falling into the Patapsco River<\/a>. Four men who were refilling potholes on the bridge at the time of the collapse fell into the water, and are presumed dead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA fully opened federal channel remains our primary goal\u2026These are ambitious timelines that may still be impacted by significant adverse weather conditions or changes in the complexity of the wreckage,\u201d Lt. Gen. Scott A. Spellmon, Army Corps of Engineers commanding general, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usace.army.mil\/Media\/News-Releases\/News-Release-Article-View\/Article\/3731723\/us-army-corps-of-engineers-develops-tentative-timeline-to-reopen-fort-mchenry-c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">wrote in a press release<\/a>. \u201cWe are working quickly and safely to clear the channel and restore full service at this port that is so vital to the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Immediately after the collapse, marine operators feared that closures could extend far longer. \u201cWe believe it\u2019s going to be six months. That\u2019s what we\u2019re telling our shippers,\u201d Rich Kane, owner of freight brokerage business Kane Group, told the <em>Washington Post <\/em>at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The bridge collapse hasn\u2019t caused a surge in marine shipping rates, as some watchers feared. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freightwaves.com\/news\/ocean-freight-rates-steady-despite-baltimore-bridge-collapse#:~:text=Xeneta's%20data%20reveals%20that%20average,per%20forty%2Dfoot%20equivalent%20unit.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">recent survey by Xeneta<\/a>, an ocean freight rate benchmarking and intelligence platform, found that spot rates from east Asia to the east coast of the U.S. have actually fallen by 1% since the bridge collapse. Most shipping traffic destined for Baltimore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2024-baltimore-bridge-collapse-ship-diverted-routes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">has been rerouted to other East Coast ports<\/a>, such as those in New York and New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>In one way, the timing of the disaster was fortunate: it coincided with Easter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freightwaves.com\/news\/rerouting-trucks-and-ships-away-from-baltimore-what-early-data-shows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">a holiday period when shipping traffic generally dips anyways<\/a>.
