{"id":221987,"date":"2024-04-09T10:23:28","date_gmt":"2024-04-09T10:23:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/09\/dave-ramsey-personal-finance-guru-who-slams-whining-gen-z-and-millennials\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:19:00","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:19:00","slug":"dave-ramsey-personal-finance-guru-who-slams-whining-gen-z-and-millennials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/09\/dave-ramsey-personal-finance-guru-who-slams-whining-gen-z-and-millennials\/","title":{"rendered":"Dave Ramsey: Personal finance guru who slams &#8216;whining&#8217; Gen Z and millennials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GettyImages-837536002-e1712656495598.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Personal finance guru Dave Ramsey has got no time for staffers\u2014particularly young people\u2014who complain about their economic outlook but aren\u2019t willing to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/02\/28\/gen-z-work-freelance-self-employment-ai-layoffs-cost-of-living\/#\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">put in the work<\/a> to change it.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><em>The New York Times<\/em> bestselling author said a portion of Gen Z and millennials \u201csuck\u201d because they don\u2019t want to take <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/01\/23\/dave-ramsey-says-millennials-gen-z-living-with-parents-trainwreck\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">responsibility for their financial futures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sHgrjppC2-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Fox Business last week<\/a>, the radio host with an audience of more than 20 million people said there\u2019s \u201calways\u201d been a group of people who <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/01\/26\/gen-z-over-having-work-ethic-questioned-most-boomers-dont-know-work-40-hours-week-not-afford-house\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">disagree with his money management strategies. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey say: \u2018You can\u2019t do it, the system has to change\u2019 and they\u2019re a victim and they\u2019re entitled,\u201d said Ramsey. <\/p>\n<p>This is true of a \u201csegment\u201d of Gen Z and millennials, the 63-year-old said, who \u201cjust suck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re just awful,\u201d Ramsey said. \u201cThey\u2019re a participation trophy, they live in their mother\u2019s basement and they can\u2019t figure out why they can\u2019t buy a house\u2014because they don\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keen to single out this group instead of tarring all Gen Z and millennials with the same  brush, the University of Tennessee alumnus added: \u201cIt\u2019s just this one segment of whiners on TikTok or something because they don\u2019t want to face the fact that they\u2019ve got to control the person in their mirror.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to hosts Sean Duffy and Daren McDowell, Ramsey also made it clear he \u201cloved\u201d having younger members on his team and said many <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/02\/21\/millennials-gen-zers-worried-savings-hot-stock-tips-comprehensive-retirement-plan-outcome-personal-finance\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Gen Z and millennials made very smart money decisions. <\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p><iframe title=\"Dave Ramsey responds to younger workers pushing back on his advice: &#039;Whiners&#039;\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sHgrjppC2-0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is that the Gen Z generation and the millennials\u2014who caught a bunch of crap\u2014are excellent generations,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing with both of them is there is a segment of them that is <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/10\/21\/art-industry-assets-performance-stocks-shares-comparison\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">very serious and is very good with their money<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey believe in it. They believe in saving. They believe in investing, they believe in the free enterprise system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramsey, who has expanded his personal finance advice into a business offering personal development and career advice, added he has hundreds of young staff on his team. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got 400, 500 millennials working on our team at Ramsey. They\u2019re incredible, I love them. Gen Z all over the building, I love them, they\u2019re fabulous,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Young Americans are feeling fine<\/h2>\n<p>While Ramsey may see a difference in approach between younger consumers, it\u2019s true that the majority has faced a slew of economic issues they\u2019ve been forced to navigate. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/04\/04\/gen-z-conscious-quitting-employees-generations-seeking-jobs-values-careers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">Gen Z entered into a working world<\/a> thrown into post-pandemic chaos, with businesses trying to recoup costs and establish how to operate moving forwards. This upheaval is <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/01\/29\/gen-z-millennial-productivity-bosses-lse-research\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">something millennials will be familiar with<\/a>\u2014many of them were early in their careers when the financial crisis of 2008 hit. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not only Gen Z and millennial <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/05\/gen-z-elder-millennials-disengaged-gallup-poll-genx-boomers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">career prospects which have been thrown into question<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/02\/08\/housing-market-millennials-disenfranchised-moodys-mark-zandi-affordability\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">young people\u2019s lifestyles as well<\/a>. At the turn of the millennium, the median house sold in the U.S. went for $165,300, <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/MSPUS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">per the St Louis Fed.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>By the end of 2023 that median had increased more than 150% to over $417,000\u2014excluding a peak at the end of 2022 when it sat at near $480,000. <\/p>\n<p>The National Association of Realtors has <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.nar.realtor\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/hai-01-2024-housing-affordability-index-2024-03-08.pdf?_gl=1*y9ofbo*_gcl_au*MTA2MDUwMTc1OS4xNzEyNjUyOTUx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">highlighted income hasn\u2019t kept pace<\/a>\u2014for more than half of 2023, the median family income didn\u2019t meet the qualifying income to be able to purchase an existing home with a 20% deposit.<\/p>\n<p>For those who may want to move out of their mother\u2019s basement, rent has also <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/CUUR0000SEHA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">more than doubled<\/a> in the past 20 years while the median household income has increased just 10%, <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/MEHOINUSA672N\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-76811d68-0 jyYcOa\">per the St Louis Fed<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>However, the upheaval millennials and Gen Z have faced may soon be behind them.
