{"id":221846,"date":"2024-04-08T23:42:51","date_gmt":"2024-04-08T23:42:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/08\/fake-ai-law-firms-are-sending-fake-dmca-threats-in-seo-scam\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:19:02","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:19:02","slug":"fake-ai-law-firms-are-sending-fake-dmca-threats-in-seo-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/08\/fake-ai-law-firms-are-sending-fake-dmca-threats-in-seo-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"Fake AI law firms are sending fake DMCA threats in SEO scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A journalist has found himself targeted by a fake AI law firm over a copyright-free photo published on his website, but all is not quite what it first appeared as the law firm has been outed as a fake.<\/p>\n<p>Ernie Smith, the writer behind online publisher and newsletter Tedium, took to <a href=\"https:\/\/writing.exchange\/@ernie\/112180217732787648\">Mastodon<\/a> at the end of March to share the first email from the law firm \u2018Commonwealth Legal Services\u2019 and the following conversations.<\/p>\n<p>A DMCA Copyright Infringement Notice was first received, with the trademark attorney \u2018Will Thomas\u2019 saying \u201cWe need you to add a credit to our client immediately,\u201d for the use of an image.<\/p>\n<p>A visible and clickable link to Tech4Gods was said to be \u2018required\u2019 and should be done so within the next five business days.<\/p>\n<p>The email says removing the image \u2018does not conclude the matter\u2019 and if \u201cappropriate action within the given timeframe\u201d isn\u2019t carried out, they\u2019ll need to \u201cactivate the case No.86342 and take action as outlined in DMCA Section 512(c).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The image in question is one from the website Unsplash that gives downloaders the right to \u2018copy, modify, distribute and use the photos for free, including commercial purposes, without asking permission from or providing attribution to the photographer or Unsplash.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2><b>Law firm is looking into following the DMCA threat<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The journalist then went on to do some checks of the firm, citing the \u2018Our Lawyers\u2019 section of the website as including all \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/what-is-generative-ai-how-does-it-work\/\">AI-generated<\/a>\u2019 photos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.404media.co\/a-law-firm-of-ai-generated-lawyers-is-sending-fake-threats-as-an-seo-scam\/\">404 Media<\/a> backed this up too, describing the supposed lawyers as having \u201cvacant, thousand-yard stares\u201d and none of them appear in any attorney or LinkedIn searches. The reverse image search results for them point to a now-broken website called <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/generative-ai-set-to-disrupt-majority-of-jobs-in-next-decade-study-reveals\/\">Generated.Photos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Smith then went on to look at the address which was described as being on the fourth floor of its building. When 404 Media reached out to him, he said in an email: \u201cI certainly don\u2019t own any images on the web.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then went on to say he had been previously buying backlinks to his website for SEO, but said he wasn\u2019t aware of who was doing this or why: \u201cI have no idea; it certainly has nothing to do with me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, recently, someone has been building spammy links against my site that I have been dealing with\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past, I had a bad link builder.
