A new <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/carbonmajors.org\/briefing\/The-Carbon-Majors-Database-26913\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Carbon Majors Database report;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Carbon Majors Database report<\/a> found that just 57 companies were responsible for 80 percent of the global carbon dioxide emissions between 2016 and 2022. Thirty-eight percent of total emissions during this period came from nation-states, 37 percent from state-owned entities and 25 percent from investor-owned companies.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 200 parties adopted the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/us-rejoin-paris-agreement-official-190909769.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:2015 Paris Agreement;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">2015 Paris Agreement<\/a>, committing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, 58 of the 100 state- and investor-owned companies in the Carbon Majors Database have increased their production in the years since (The Climate Accountability Institute launched Carbon Majors in 2013 to hold <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/we-can-make-the-steel-of-tomorrow-without-the-fossil-fuels-of-yesteryear-150050946.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:fossil fuel producers;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">fossil fuel producers<\/a> accountable and is hosted by InfluenceMap). This number represents producers worldwide, including 87 percent of those assessed in Asia, 57 percent in Europe and 43 percent in North America.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not a clear case of things slowly turning around, either. The <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/news\/global-coal-demand-set-to-remain-at-record-levels-in-2023\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:International Energy Agency;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">International Energy Agency<\/a> found coal consumption increased by eight percent over the seven years to 8.3 billion tons \u2014 a record high. The report names state-owned Coal India as one of the top three carbon dioxide producers. Russia&#8217;s state-owned energy company Gazprom and state-owned oil firm Saudi Aramco rounded out the trio of worst offenders.<\/p>\n<p><a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2017-01-12-exxon-must-turn-over-decades-of-climate-change-research.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Exxon Mobil;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Exxon Mobil<\/a> topped the list of United States companies, contributing 1.4 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions. &#8220;These companies have made billions of dollars in profits while denying the problem and delaying and obstructing climate policy.
