It seemed like the whole world loved Barbie<\/em> when it came out last year, but Shakira<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s sons aren\u2019t big fans. The 47-year-old \u201cWaka Waka\u201d artist revealed in a new interview that Sasha and Milan<\/a> \u2014 whom she shares with ex Gerard Piqu\u00e9<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 \u201chated\u201d Greta Gerwig<\/strong><\/a> and Margot Robbie<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s 2023 film.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy sons absolutely hated it,\u201d Shakira told Allure<\/em><\/a> in an interview published on Monday, April 1. \u201cThey felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent. I\u2019m raising two boys. I want \u2018em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women.\u201d<\/p>\n

The music artist continued, \u201cI like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide. I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that compliment should not be lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shakira gives her opinion on the \u2018Barbie\u2019 movie to Allure:<\/p>\n

After being asked, \u201cJust because a woman can do it all doesn\u2019t mean she should?\u201d Shakira elaborated, \u00a0\u201cWhy not share the load with people who deserve to carry it, who have a duty to carry it as well?\u201d<\/p>\n

After premiering in July 2023, Barbie<\/em> was met with widespread praise, but a few critics slammed it for its jokes about men. Some even accused the project of being \u201canti-male.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Ryan Gosling<\/strong> <\/a>\u2014 who played Ken in the film \u2014 has been a proud speaker for the film and his collaboration with Greta and Margot. The 43-year-old actor even performed his character\u2019s hit song from the movie, \u201cI\u2019m Just Ken,\u201d<\/a> at the 2024 Oscars. The performance received high praise, and Ryan also called out<\/a> the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for snubbing Greta and Margot for Oscar nominations.<\/p>\n

Despite how much Shakira\u2019s children \u201chated\u201d Barbie<\/em>, the \u201cPunter\u00eda\u201d artist explained to Allure<\/em> that she finds it \u201crefreshing\u201d when women can be their \u201cunapologetic\u201d selves. She reflected on the cover of her 2005 album, Oral Fixation<\/em>, for which she posed as the character Eve.<\/p>\n

\u201cEve was a story created by misogynists to put women in the little box where we have to remain silent, not speak our minds, and not be a catalyst for change. To keep things as they are,\u201d she pointed out. \u201cI\u2019ll take that as a resounding \u2018no.\u2019 I think there\u2019s something refreshing about women when they get to be themselves and be unapologetic. Because we\u2019ve had to apologize so many damn times in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
