The company\u2019s marketing budget last year dwarfed the $175,000 Vivvix estimates that the company spent in 2022. Some tout Tesla features such as its Autopilot and extra cargo space, while others show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=L2fticPH-to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">families<\/a> using the touchscreen to play games or stream video.<\/p>\n<p>Musk and Tesla have often dismissed traditional forms of promotion, relying instead on word-of-mouth, referral programs, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/02\/10\/steve-wozniak-says-elon-musk-cult-leader-like-steve-jobs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">starpower<\/a> of its chief executive to attract customers. The Tesla CEO has previously said money spent on publicity campaigns would be better spent elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTesla does not advertise or pay for endorsements. Instead, we use that money to make the product great,\u201d he wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1129924410339495937\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">post<\/a> on X, formerly Twitter, in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Tesla shares\u2019 nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/22\/elon-musk-tesla-250-billion-market-cap-plummet-shanghai-plant-production-cutbacks\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">30% nosedive<\/a> since January and heightened competition from <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/15\/nissan-toyota-china-evs-wiped-out-byd\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">Chinese EV makers<\/a> has recently led Musk to open up more to advertising. In response to a question at last year\u2019s annual shareholder meeting in <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/16\/elon-musk-says-tesla-will-try-a-little-advertising\/?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAL5i3qFDXeeQx0gKZtv-2ESN_RKE8cM_isQpQ5gn6mlzfmO3NB0DrL43XDiBm9uIosZ7dH2iCJov7ze_a7QxfMGOp-xiv6v4z6OBIpc4643Vk53sW0SLLmkMIOtwDNKN6xiTF2wQVSQIVaPYkFoOTCeslXfNkWZofNX3Gf0e6JaD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">May<\/a>, Musk said Tesla would \u201c[T]ry a little advertising and see how it goes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s reversal on advertising comes as the first three months of the year wrap up and analysts prepare for what could be a subpar quarter for the EV maker. Several analysts have already downgraded their estimates for first quarter vehicle deliveries (an approximation for sales) after Bloomberg reported last week that Tesla was cutting back production at its plant in China.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Wedbush Securities cut its estimate to 425,968 from about 475,000, according to a note.
