Take-Two Interactive (the parent company of Grand Theft Auto publisher Rockstar and others) has <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:1;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20240327928202\/en\/Take-Two-Interactive-Software-Inc.-to-Acquire-The-Gearbox-Entertainment-Company-Inc.-Developer-of-Highly-Successful-Borderlands-Franchise\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:agreed;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:1;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a> to buy Gearbox Entertainment from the embattled Embracer Group. The deal is worth $460 million in stock and is expected to close by June 30. It had been <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/embracer-may-sell-borderlands-creator-gearbox-amid-financial-woes-161505145.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:rumored for several months;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> that Embracer was planning to sell off Gearbox.<\/p>\n<p>Take-Two is acquiring three studios: Gearbox Software, Gearbox Montr\u00e9al and Gearbox Studio Quebec. It will fully own the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/tag\/borderlands\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Borderlands;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a>, Tiny Tina\u2019s Wonderlands, Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms and Duke Nukem franchises, along with \u201cGearbox\u2019s future pipeline.\u201d Gearbox will operate under the umbrella of 2K, which already publishes Borderlands and Tiny Tina games. Gearbox founder and CEO Randy Pitchford will remain at the helm.<\/p>\n<p>Embracer is hanging onto Gearbox Publishing San Francisco, which will be renamed. That holds the publishing rights for the Remnant series, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/hyper-light-breaker-hands-on-im-here-for-the-hoverboard-210045970.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Hyper Light Breaker;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em><\/em><\/a> and unannounced games. Embracer will also keep Cryptic Studios (<em>Neverwinter Online<\/em> and <em>Star Trek Online<\/em>), Lost Boys Interactive and Captured Dimensions.<\/p>\n<p>Take-Two notes that Gearbox has \u201csix key interactive entertainment projects in various stages of development.\u201d Those include five sequels, among them <em>Homeworld 3<\/em> and the next Borderlands game.<\/p>\n<p>Embracer <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/embracer-group-gearbox-merger-aspyr-acquisition-154253122.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:bought Gearbox in 2021;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> for an initial $363 million. If Gearbox met certain targets, the deal would have been worth just over an extra $1 billion over six years.<\/p>\n<p>Since it bought Gearbox, Embracer has gone through rough times. Last year, it <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/embracer-announces-layoffs-and-game-cancellations-after-a-2-billion-deal-falls-through-144311854.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:announced a major restructuring;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> after a $2 billion investment deal (said to be from a group backed by Saudi Arabia\u2019s sovereign wealth fund) fell apart. Since then, Embracer has has <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/timesplitters-studio-free-radical-design-has-shut-down-194718243.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:closed;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/saints-row-studio-volition-abruptly-closes-due-to-restructuring-at-embracer-group-184731175.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:several studios;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/embracer-sells-a-big-chunk-of-saber-interactive-in-a-deal-worth-around-500-million-143713156.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:sold off others;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a>.
