But if we aren\u2019t taught how to be confident in our younger years, it can make for a self-conscious, insecure adulthood.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cHappiness takes many forms, and we want our children to have a skill set that brings out self-confidence,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/evamoskowitz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">Eva Moskowitz, Ph.D.<\/a>, CEO of charter school system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.successacademies.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">Success Academy<\/a> and author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/0063310228\/keywords=parenting%20books?tag=harpercollinsus-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\"><em>A+ Parenting: The Surprisingly Fun Guide to Raising Surprisingly Smart Kids<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a highly scheduled and frenetic world with lots of external events happening regularly, we can forget that intellectual engagement is actually a pretty important part of a kid\u2019s happiness and confidence,\u201d Moskowitz tells <em>Fortune<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The educator and mother of three weighs in on how to raise and motivate children to be their <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2022\/10\/06\/self-affirmations-can-improve-your-confidence-heres-how-to-start\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">most confident<\/a>, happy selves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Push children beyond what is \u2018easy\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Oftentimes, parents and educators believe self-confidence grows by having kids do tasks that are easily achievable, Moskowitz says. In her experience, though, that\u2019s hardly the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSelf-confidence comes when kids work through a struggle\u2014when they are given a hard math problem or given a difficult opponent,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen they are given a difficult learning task and they make it to the other side, that is what builds confidence. And we take that away from children at our own peril and, frankly, at their own peril.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a world of instant gratification, it\u2019s easy to get fed up when we don\u2019t succeed immediately. But success and self-confidence come from navigating and recovering from failure, Moskowitz says. For instance, economic factors may make it difficult for some kids to participate in after-school activities they might enjoy, such as sports that require a fee or the purchase of equipment to play.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teach coping mechanisms for anxiety and stress<\/h2>\n<p>School, home life, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/02\/23\/friends-trump-diet-exercise-healthy-life-middle-aged\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">friendships<\/a>, extracurriculars, and even things like appearance and crushes are factors that all can weigh heavily on children of all ages, leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/06\/08\/stress-crave-sugary-food-overeating\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">stress<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/caregiver-guide-anxiety-depression-help-improve-mental-health\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">anxiety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK476265\/#:~:text=Childhood%20anxiety%20disorders%20are%20very%20common%2C%20affecting%20one%20in%20eight%20children.&amp;text=The%20National%20Institute%20of%20Mental,percent%20for%20severe%20anxiety%20disorder.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">Childhood anxiety disorders<\/a> affect one in eight children and nearly one in four teenagers, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Anxiety can lower self-confidence, but a little of it is actually normal and healthy, Moskowitz says: \u201cIt\u2019s a bit of a Goldilocks theory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every child responds to stressors differently, so it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/love-languages-improve-relationship-parents-kids\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">important to be in tune with your child\u2019s behavior<\/a> and how they respond to academic rigor or their social environment, Moskowitz says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost children can learn to deal with stress,\u201d she says. \u201cYou\u2019re not going to be able to protect them entirely from the thrust of the external world, whether that is economic pressures or any number of influences in their lives or, frankly, world events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She adds, \u201cWe really <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/10\/05\/parents-raise-successful-confident-kids\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">owe it to our kids<\/a> to treat them to navigate those stressors and to be able to talk to them about what they are feeling and how to cope with those feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/05\/23\/tips-for-parents-for-kids-social-media-use\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">To help a child with anxiety<\/a>, try teaching them the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calm.com\/blog\/5-4-3-2-1-a-simple-exercise-to-calm-the-mind#:~:text=The%2054321%20(or%205%2C%204,1%20thing%20you%20can%20taste.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">5, 4, 3, 2, 1 grounding method<\/a>\u2014or a version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodrx.com\/health-topic\/childrens-health\/coping-skills-for-kids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\"><em>I Spy<\/em>.<\/a> Ask them to identify five things they can see, four things they can touch, three things they can hear, two things they can smell, and one thing they can taste. This will help engage their senses and calm their nerves. This method may be beneficial at any age.<\/p>\n<p>If a child has the tools to ground themselves and knows how to talk through what they are feeling, they can be confident in their ability to deal with stress and anxiety.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Parents: Enjoy parenting<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to get caught up in the hullabaloo that is <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2024\/02\/22\/alabama-birmingham-ivf-court-ruling-embryos-legal-status\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">parenting<\/a>: frantic school drop-offs, overtired kids (and yourself), a million and one items on a neverending to-do list. But kids sense when you\u2019re stressed, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you impose your parenting angst and stress on your kids, they won\u2019t enjoy childhood as much as they can and you won\u2019t enjoy <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2024\/02\/23\/florida-defies-cdc-in-measles-outbreak\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">parenting<\/a>,\u201d Moskowitz says. \u201cAnd it\u2019s really important that one\u2019s child knows they <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/neuroscientist-mom-parenting-advice\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-c908bf88-0 iyWINF\">enjoy being a parent<\/a>, being <em>their <\/em>parent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Watch movies and TV shows with your children that <em>you<\/em> actually enjoy and play games <em>you<\/em> like to play, she says.
