Like Apple\u2019s novel approach of outsourcing the job of putting its gadgets together to Foxconn, Henrik Fisker wanted to do the same with Austrian manufacturer Magna Steyr. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2024-03-01\/fisker-got-carried-away-comparing-itself-with-apple\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">he did<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But now, none of that may matter because Fisker faces an altogether different challenge\u2014possible bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<p>What went wrong with the Danish auto designer\u2019s eponymous company?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Launch and early years<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The California-based Fisker launched in 2016, after its founder\u2019s former startup called Fisker Automotive folded a few years earlier.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Fisker said he was hoping to invest in new tech that helped his company develop rapidly while making affordable all-electric <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-10-04\/henrik-fisker-is-starting-a-namesake-car-company-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">SUVs<\/a>. A challenger to the market-leading Tesla, if things went well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, as the EV craze was beginning to catch fire, Fisker managed to gather the interest of investors looking <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2020\/10\/23\/electric-cars-evs-public-funding-startups-faraday-future-spac-fisker-karma\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">to foray<\/a> into the space. Although Fisker came with top-notch design expertise, he also had a complicated history given his first failed startup. But his new company looked <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2020\/10\/30\/fisker-inc-stock-fsr-shares-ipo-spac-ev-electric-vehicle-car-startup\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">promising<\/a> in the clutter of EV and EV-adjacent companies that were rushing to get a slice of the action in the late 2010s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2020\/10\/23\/electric-cars-evs-public-funding-startups-faraday-future-spac-fisker-karma\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">went public<\/a> via a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (or SPAC) on the New York Stock Exchange. At the time, the company projected revenue of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/no-revenue-no-problem-wall-street-rushes-into-electric-car-and-truck-startups-11603286077\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">$13 billion<\/a> by 2025 (it was pre-revenue in 2020).<\/p>\n<p>Bringing Fisker\u2019s concept to market was the next ordeal. A slew of software, supply chain and regulatory problems meant the company\u2019s first model, the Fisker Ocean, didn\u2019t start delivering its cars until <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.fiskerinc.com\/news\/news-details\/2023\/Fisker-Makes-First-22-Deliveries-of-Fisker-Ocean-SUV-to-Customers-in-the-United-States\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">a year<\/a> ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of Fisker\u2019s problems ring true for the entire EV industry as demand slows, price competition increases and investor interest wanes. Several EV industry players have folded because of these headwinds, including Arrival and Lordstown. Its Ocean SUVs are now being investigated by U.S. federal regulators over <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/01\/15\/fisker-ocean-suv-nhtsa-investiagtion-brakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">brake-related problems<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also in deep financial trouble. In its full-year earnings report <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.fiskerinc.com\/news\/news-details\/2024\/Fisker-Inc.-Announces-Preliminary-Q4-and-Full-Year-2023-Results\/default.aspx#:~:text=Fisker%20Ocean%20production%20was%204%2C789,and%204%2C929%20vehicles%20were%20delivered.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">last month<\/a>, the Tesla-rival made close to 10,200 EVs but only <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.fiskerinc.com\/news\/news-details\/2024\/Fisker-Inc.-Announces-Preliminary-Q4-and-Full-Year-2023-Results\/default.aspx#:~:text=Fisker%20Ocean%20production%20was%204%2C789,and%204%2C929%20vehicles%20were%20delivered.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">delivered 4,900<\/a> of those. Fisker also said at the time that it was precariously cash-strapped and hoped to receive an investment from \u201ca large automaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It laid off 15% of its staff as it planned to pivot its strategy amid liquidity issues. Not least, it raised \u201csubstantial doubt\u201d over its ability to continue with operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fisker received a warning from NYSE because of its low stock value in February. On Monday, within a month of the previous notice, the company was delisted from the world\u2019s biggest stock exchange.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The cocktail of problems has brought the ambitious EV company closer to bankruptcy than ever before.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is this the last leg?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Earlier this month, Fisker said it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/autos\/fisker-to-pause-production-for-six-weeks-a03458a9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">suspend production<\/a> for six weeks as it missed an interest payment and would try to raise $150 million by selling convertible notes. It\u2019s long-awaited talks with that unnamed \u201clarge automaker\u201d for a possible investment fell through this week.<\/p>\n<p>The California-based Fisker\u2019s last beacon of hope was reported to have <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/02\/tesla-rival-fisker-in-talks-with-nissan-partnership\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">been Nissan<\/a>, the Japanese auto giant, which pulled out at the last minute, according to Reuters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fisker\u2019s future has never felt so uncertain, and whether the company does manage to claw its way out of crisis during the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/03\/21\/bmw-growth-high-end-evs-german-carmaker-electric-vehicle-demand\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">ongoing EV winter<\/a> remains to be seen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Henrik Fisker has remained optimistic throughout.
