A new\u00a0Pirates of the Caribbean<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>film is long overdue. The beloved film franchise, based on Walt Disney\u2019s theme park attraction of the same name, launched with 2003\u2019s\u00a0The Curse of the Black Pearl\u00a0<\/em>starring\u00a0Johnny Depp<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Orlando Bloom<\/strong><\/a>, and Kiera Knightley<\/strong><\/a>. The Oscar-nominated movie was followed by four more films: 2006\u2019s\u00a0Dead Man\u2019s Chest<\/em>,\u00a02007\u2019s\u00a0At World\u2019s End<\/em>, 2011\u2019s On Stranger Tides<\/em>, and 2017\u2019s\u00a0Dead Men Tell No Tales<\/em>.\u00a0In total, the Pirates of the\u00a0Caribbean\u00a0<\/i>franchise has grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide at the box office and is the 14th highest-grossing film series ever.<\/p>\n

A sixth film has been in development since 2017, but plans were stalled due in part to Johnny\u2019s defamation trial<\/a> against his ex-wife,\u00a0Amber Heard<\/strong><\/a>. A female-led spinoff movie with Margot Robbie<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>as the lead star\u00a0was in the works at Disney, but the actress revealed that the project was canceled<\/a>. We\u2019ve rounded up everything you need to know about the reboot film and Johnny\u2019s future in the franchise below.<\/p>\n

\u2018Pirates\u2019 Reboot Cast<\/h2>\n

The reboot film was first announced in June 2020.\u00a0Jerry Bruckheimer<\/strong>, who produced all the\u00a0Pirates\u00a0<\/em>movies so far, confirmed in an interview with\u00a0The Sunday Times<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>in May 2022 that they were still working on the screenplay for the reboot. Jerry never shared the official title or plot details, but he did confirm that they were \u201ctalking\u201d to Margot about the plans.<\/p>\n

During a March 2024 interview with Comicbook.com<\/a>, Jerry confirmed that the reboot is still happening but with a new cast. When asked when audiences can see it, he replied, \u201cIt\u2019s hard to tell. You don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith Top Gun,<\/em> you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun<\/em>, I can\u2019t tell you,\u201d Jerry said about Tom Cruise<\/strong>. \u201cBut we\u2019re gonna reboot Pirates<\/em>, so that is easier to put together because you don\u2019t have to wait for certain actors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnny Depp\u2019s Exit<\/h2>\n

Johnny\u2019s future in the\u00a0Pirates of the\u00a0Caribbean\u00a0<\/i>franchise was threatened when his ex-wife, Amber Heard, accused him of domestic abuse<\/a> in an op-ed published by the\u00a0Washington Post<\/em> in December 2018. At the time, Johnny was set to star in the sixth film with Joachim Ronning<\/strong> directing, and Ted Elliott<\/strong>\u00a0and Craig\u00a0Mazin\u00a0<\/strong>as screenwriters. But Johnny\u00a0wasn\u2019t offered many jobs, he was forced to resign from the\u00a0Fantastic Beasts<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>franchise at Warner Bros behest, and eventually, Disney cut ties with him on the film. During the defamation trial, which began April 11, Johnny\u2019s agent\u00a0Jack Whigham\u00a0<\/strong>claimed that the actor was set to earn over $22 million for Pirates of the Caribbean <\/em><\/a>6\u00a0<\/em>until Disney abruptly went \u201cin a different direction\u201d after Amber\u2019s article was published.<\/p>\n

Johnny confirmed during his testimony that he\u2019d never return to the film franchise no matter how much he\u2019d get paid. He did, however, share that he initially wanted to do\u00a0Pirates of the Caribbean 6\u00a0<\/em>to give his character Captain Jack Sparrow a \u201cproper goodbye.\u201d\u00a0Even though Johnny was let go from the films, Disney still featured Jack Sparrow at their theme parks. Johnny said in court that Disney \u201cdidn\u2019t want there to be something trailing behind [Depp] that they\u2019d find.\u201d Johnny won the defamation trial<\/a> on June 1.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0Sunday Times\u00a0<\/em>interview, Jerry was asked about Johnny\u2019s potential return to the\u00a0Pirates\u00a0<\/em>franchise. \u201cNot at this point. The future is yet to be decided,\u201d he said. Fans reacted poorly to that and threatened to boycott the franchise without Johnny. \u201cAnd I confirm that no one is going to watch a <\/span>Pirates Of The<\/span> Caribbean<\/span> movie without Johnny Depp,\u201d one fan tweeted<\/a>. Another said<\/a>, \u201cNo one will ever replace johnny depp as captain jack sparrow, he MADE pirates of the<\/span> caribbean.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Margot Robbie Was Supposed to Be the New Lead<\/h2>\n

Margot\u2019s attachment to the Pirates of the\u00a0Caribbean\u00a0<\/i>reboot film was announced in June 2020 via\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0The report said that the Pirates\u00a0<\/em>movie wouldn\u2019t be a spinoff of the regular franchise, \u201cbut rather a wholly original story with new characters.\u201d Jerry confirmed in The Sunday Times\u00a0<\/em>interview that Margot is still attached to the project. \u201cWe\u2019re talking to Margot Robbie. We are developing two Pirates scripts \u2014 one with her, one without,\u201d he said. Margot never publicly addressed her involvement in the\u00a0Pirates of the Caribbean\u00a0<\/em>franchise until November 2022, when she revealed that the spinoff is no longer happening.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led \u2014 not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story \u2014 which we thought would\u2019ve been really cool,\u201d she told Vanity Fair<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0\u201cBut I guess they don\u2019t want to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
