They were informed via a notice that the next day the carmaker would be \u201cholding important operational meetings that require specific attention and participation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo ensure everyone can effectively participate,\u201d the notice continued, \u201cwe have decided to implement a mandatory remote work day.\u201d Employees, it indicated, were \u201cexpected to work from home unless otherwise instructed by your manager.\u201d\u00a0The Car Dealership Guy <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">X<\/a> account <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GuyDealership\/status\/1771016530500739439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">shared<\/a> the notice on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The workers in question were salaried, nonunion employees in technology and engineering in the U.S.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During the remote meeting on Friday, they were informed that they were being laid off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The automaker\u2014which counts Jeep, Ram, Chrysler, and Dodge among its brands\u2014said in a statement: \u201cAs the auto industry continues to face unprecedented uncertainties and heightened competitive pressures around the world, Stellantis continues to make the appropriate structural decisions across the enterprise to improve efficiency and optimize our cost structure.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One mechanical engineer let go on Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/stellantis-announces-hundreds-layoffs-white-225255358.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">spoke about the process anonymously<\/a> with WJBK <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/fox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Fox<\/a>, a TV station in Detroit, saying, \u201cIt was a mass firing of everybody that was on the call.\u201d He suspected the real reason behind the layoffs involved a push to move jobs to \u201clow-cost countries,\u201d noting that Stellantis is outsourcing many jobs to India, Mexico, and Brazil.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Fortune <\/em>reached out to the company over the weekend but received no immediate reply outside normal business hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But speaking on Thursday to the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, which first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/economy\/jobs\/chrysler-parent-stellantis-laying-off-about-400-employees-in-us-8d8c2991\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">reported<\/a> on the layoffs, the company said it would offer affected workers a comprehensive separation package and transition assistance. It added that the reductions would help it preserve critical skills needed to implement its production plans for electric vehicles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company intends to spend over $50 billion through the end of the decade to electrify its lineup, despite a recent slowdown in EV sales growth and surging demand for hybrids. It plans to offer eight new EV models in the U.S. by year\u2019s end, and more than two dozen by 2030.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Layoffs etiquette<\/h2>\n<p>How to properly conduct layoffs, and inform employees of them, is much debated.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/goldman-sachs-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Goldman Sachs<\/a> eliminated 3,200 jobs in a manner that <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/01\/14\/goldman-sachs-employees-laid-off-in-meetings-emailed-calendar-invites-for-report\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">received criticism<\/a>. Employees had reportedly been emailed calendar invites for fake morning meetings, some as early as 7:30, at the bank\u2019s New York headquarters. When they showed up, they learned they were being laid off, with their manager looking on.<\/p>\n<p>During Elon Musk\u2019s chaotic takeover of Twitter, some employees <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/01\/14\/goldman-sachs-employees-laid-off-in-meetings-emailed-calendar-invites-for-report\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">found out<\/a> their jobs were being eliminated after they couldn\u2019t log on to the company email or messaging systems. Others learned their fate via an (unsigned) email sent after the workday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An HR professional slammed Musk\u2019s method, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/11\/08\/elon-musk-twitter-mass-layoff-cruel-human-resources-managers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">tweeting<\/a>: \u201cWhen leaders are this craven, it\u2019s because they\u2019re prioritizing their own comfort above others\u2019 or they\u2019re opting not to put in hard, time-consuming work, or both. It\u2019s weak, it\u2019s pathetic, and it\u2019s cruel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One X user, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/spotted_model\/status\/1771016742124339390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">responding<\/a> to the Car Dealership Guy post late on Thursday, accurately predicted what the notice from Stellantis meant, writing: \u201cLayoffs. My company did it just like that.
