At 24, Ballmer dropped out of Stanford Business School to join Microsoft and Gates, his former Harvard classmate. As the company\u2019s 30th employee, Ballmer netted a base salary of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/07\/27\/billionaire-steve-ballmer-started-out-making-only-50000-at-microsoft.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">$50,000<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The small tech startup quickly became one America\u2019s fastest-growing companies, overtaking the incumbent <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/apple\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Apple<\/a> and dominating the growth of personal computers in the 1990s by developing Windows, an easy-to-use operating system. More recently, he invested $400 million to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/10\/19\/steve-ballmer-billionaire-former-microsoft-ceo-will-invest-400-million-black-entrepreneurs\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">support Black-owned businesses<\/a> in 2022; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ballmergroup.org\/blog\/investing-43-million-to-build-washingtons-early-childhood-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">$43 million<\/a> in the early childhood education workforce in Washington State last March; and last September he announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ballmergroup.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">$175 million investment<\/a> over the next seven years, aimed at helping 4 million young people, especially in communities of color who face systemic inequalities, along the path to economic mobility.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In one of his final interviews as Microsoft\u2019s CEO in 2013, Ballmer <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2013\/12\/12\/5-management-tips-from-microsoft-ceo-steve-ballmer\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">sat down with <em>Fortune<\/em><\/a> to share some of his biggest tips for success.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Take a look at the big picture<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u201cIf the CEO doesn\u2019t see the playing field, nobody else can,\u201d Ballmer said in the 2013 interview with <em>Fortune<\/em>. \u201cThe team may need to see it too, but the CEO really needs to be able to see the entire competitive space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s variety of products, like cloud services and personal computing, touch a lot of different markets and competition seems to lurk around every corner. During his stint as CEO, he faced <a href=\"https:\/\/fastercapital.com\/content\/The-Ballmer-Effect-on-Stocks--Analyzing-Microsoft-s-Performance.html#:~:text=Ballmer's%20focus%20on%20expanding%20Microsoft's,to%20%2470%20billion%20in%202013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">criticism<\/a> for not adapting quickly enough to changing market trends. Competitors in mobile devices, like <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/samsung-life-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Samsung<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/nokia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Nokia<\/a>, and cloud computing services, like Google and Apple, were on the rise. Microsoft\u2019s stock was <a href=\"https:\/\/fastercapital.com\/content\/The-Ballmer-Effect-on-Stocks--Analyzing-Microsoft-s-Performance.html#:~:text=Ballmer%27s%20focus%20on%20expanding%20Microsoft%27s,to%20%2470%20billion%20in%202013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">stagnating<\/a> in the years leading to his retirement in 2014. Still, Microsoft\u2019s revenue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/1399\/microsoft-stock-under-steve-ballmer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">nearly quadrupled<\/a> under his watch.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Always look for talent\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>While at Microsoft, Ballmer hired some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley, like <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/gallery\/news\/companies\/2012\/11\/20\/7-business-leadership-shakeups-2012.fortune\/7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Steven Sinofksy<\/a>, who headed Windows; J Allard, who served as chief technology officer of Xbox; and <a href=\"http:\/\/tech.fortune.cnn.com\/2010\/10\/26\/whats-next-for-the-post-ozzie-microsoft-no-one-knows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Ray Ozzie<\/a>, Microsoft\u2019s chief software architect.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a 2009 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/video\/steve-ballmer-making-outside-hires\/94C68B4F-990A-4338-899B-AA2262D94A8C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">interview<\/a> with the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, Ballmer said in order \u201cto be dynamic,\u201d companies should aim to promote internal workers \u201c70% or 80% of the time,\u201d and when a company wants to take on outside hires, they should be \u201copen-minded\u201d and ask for references.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In interviews for potential new hires, the two biggest qualities he looks for are passion that he \u201ccan see in the eyes,\u201d and someone he can relate to. One of his favorite questions to ask is \u201ctell me about something you\u2019re proud of.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Always reconsider\u2013that\u2019s how to find the most successful business model\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>At Microsoft, the name of Ballmer\u2019s game was rethink, rethink, rethink.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a day when people said all the money is in software; get out of hardware,\u201d he told <em>Fortune<\/em> in 2013. Hardware was what Apple and Samsung, Microsoft\u2019s biggest rivals at the time, were also profitable in. In 2013, Apple <a href=\"https:\/\/stockanalysis.com\/stocks\/aapl\/revenue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">recorded<\/a> 170.9 billion in revenue. Google <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/266206\/googles-annual-global-revenue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">recorded<\/a> $55.5 billion. \u201cThen somebody will say, \u2018oh, it\u2019s all about advertising,\u2019\u201d which is what its rival, Google, was making bank on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe playing field is always changing,\u201d he said, and the sentiment holds true in his current endeavors on the basketball court.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A decade after buying the Clippers, Ballmer is still thinking creatively about how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/shaneyoung\/2024\/03\/07\/clippers-owner-steve-ballmer-launches-halo-sports-and-entertainment\/?sh=691794717d0f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">revamp the franchise<\/a>. He\u2019s been signing\u2013and retaining\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/38907805\/nba-big-four-history-james-harden-clippers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">superstars<\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/6450\/kawhi-leonard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Kawhi Leonard<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4251\/paul-george\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Paul George<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3468\/russell-westbrook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Russell Westbrook<\/a> to form a quartet of stars in preparation for the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/intuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Intuit<\/a> Dome <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/intuitdome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">grand opening<\/a> in August, Forbes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/shaneyoung\/2024\/03\/07\/clippers-owner-steve-ballmer-launches-halo-sports-and-entertainment\/?sh=691794717d0f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">reported<\/a>, the team\u2019s future home court and the setting of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/nba-all-star-weekend-future-locations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">2026 NBA All-Star weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This month, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/shaneyoung\/2024\/03\/07\/clippers-owner-steve-ballmer-launches-halo-sports-and-entertainment\/?sh=691794717d0f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">launched a new brand<\/a>, <em>Halo Sports and Entertainment<\/em>, which will feature the new dome, the LA Clippers, their <a href=\"https:\/\/ontario.gleague.nba.com\/clippers-g-league-affiliate-renamed-ontario-clippers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">G-league affiliate team<\/a> called the Ontario Clippers, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thekiaforum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">KIA Forum<\/a>, a music and entertainment arena in Inglewood, which he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/timnewcomb\/2020\/03\/25\/steve-ballmer-buys-the-forum-clearing-path-toward-new-la-clippers-arena\/?sh=20674a091459\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">purchased in 2020<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Plan for the short term and long term<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u201cGetting the big things right that make all the money, that\u2019s long cycle,\u201d Ballmer told <em>Fortune<\/em> in 2013, emphasizing that \u201creally executing in a way that allows you to do it, that\u2019s short cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the long-term projects he\u2019s chipped away at is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usafacts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">USAFacts<\/a>, a database that collects and analyzes how federal, state and local governments generate revenue and spend money.
