Dating after divorce can feel like landing on Mars, especially if you\u2019re navigating the modern world of dating apps<\/a> that maybe didn\u2019t exist when you last dated.<\/p>\n

Just ask Amy Nobile<\/a>, who entered the dating scene in 2017 after divorcing from her husband of 20 years. Chatting up strangers and trying to get her friends to set her up in New York City\u2019s wild west dating scene went nowhere, so she turned to dating apps. After making plenty of profile mistakes and dating three to four times a day, three to four days a week, she says she finally met her now husband\u2014\u201cthe love of her life\u201d\u2014on Bumble. It inspired her to start her own business, Love, Amy<\/a>, where she helps clients find love on the apps.<\/p>\n

The 54-year-old, who is on track to reach $1 million in revenue by the end of the year per documents reviewed by Fortune<\/em>, works with everyone from millennials to divorcees<\/a>. While that ratio flip-flops, she estimates that 60% of her current client base falls into the latter camp.<\/p>\n

As someone who consistently works with this demographic, and who has been in their shoes herself, Nobile knows what makes a profile sing for those looking for a second shot at love. For Fortune<\/em>, she highlights the most common mistakes divorcees<\/a> make on the apps and a few guiding principles they can abide by.<\/p>\n

Mistake #1: Including too many photos with kids<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cI encourage people to state they have kids and whether they\u2019re open to more, don\u2019t hide that,\u201d says the mother of two. But don\u2019t include more than one photo with your children. \u201cIt\u2019s just a little weird and a turn off.\u201d<\/p>\n

The rest of your photos should showcase your personality and interests, she says. The first one should be a headshot, preferably outside. \u201cYou should definitely be laughing or smiling. Your eyes should be kind of wide open and sparkly,\u201d she says. \u201cIt should be that shot that your best friend looks at and says, \u2018That\u2019s so you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The second picture should be a full-length shot showing your body, whether it\u2019s from a wedding or at a sporting event\u2014\u201dbut nothing overly sexy,\u201d Nobile<\/a> adds. She advises against gym selfies, fish pics, or \u201cego\u201d photos in front of a luxury car, boat, or plane.<\/p>\n

Mistake #2: Trying to appeal to everyone<\/strong><\/h2>\n

While Nobile sees this mistake with many clients, she says it\u2019s more common among the divorced crowd<\/a>. \u201cWe haven\u2019t been in the dating world for a minute and we\u2019re nervous we\u2019re not going to get a big response,\u201d she says. \u201cSo we\u2019re trying to appeal to everybody, kind of watering down the profile with general things like I love travel and meditating, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the goal, Nobile asserts, is not to get hundreds of likes. \u201cYou actually want less people to like you, and I know that is counterintuitive but you want to be so specific that it\u2019s actually a deterrent for people who aren\u2019t right for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mistake #3: Being too afraid to write what you\u2019re looking for<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you want a relationship or if you want to get married again, Nobile recommends writing that in your profile. If you just want to have fun, that\u2019s okay\u2014but don\u2019t portray yourself differently.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should be light and fun and earnest, but people don\u2019t know which prompts to use or they don\u2019t write enough,\u201d she says, suggesting that you should use the two truths and a lie, key to my heart, and my simple pleasures prompts\u2014and be very specific.<\/p>\n

Before even getting on the apps, she says you need to first do some introspection and figure out what you do want and who you are now. That might involve some journaling and brainstorming with yourself\u2014think about how you want to be treated, how you want to feel in the partnership, and even if you want monogamy. \u201cYou\u2019re different now post divorce, so you have to do a little bit of soul searching,\u201d she adds.\u00a0<\/p>\n
