{"id":215506,"date":"2024-03-21T01:43:04","date_gmt":"2024-03-21T01:43:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/21\/intel-set-to-receive-8-5bn-from-us-gov-in-semiconductor-drive\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:20:16","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:20:16","slug":"intel-set-to-receive-8-5bn-from-us-gov-in-semiconductor-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/21\/intel-set-to-receive-8-5bn-from-us-gov-in-semiconductor-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"Intel set to receive $8.5bn from US Gov in semiconductor drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/slejven-djurakovic-0uXzoEzYZ4I-unsplash-900x600.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Technology giant Intel is set to receive up to $8.5 billion in direct funding and $11 billion in loans from the U.S. Government to re-establish American leadership in semiconductor manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Announced today (Mar. 20) from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2024\/03\/biden-harris-administration-announces-preliminary-terms-intel-support\">Biden-Harris Administration<\/a>, the investment under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/4346\">CHIPS and Science Act<\/a>, as well as Intel\u2019s already proposed funding over the next five years, marks one of the largest investments ever announced in U.S. semiconductor manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>The CHIPS money is expected to include investments in Chandler in Arizona, Rio Rancho in New Mexico, New Albany in Ohio, and Hillsboro in Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>In the Government-issued statement\u00a0the impact of this funding is said to \u201cdirectly create over 10,000 manufacturing jobs and nearly 20,000 construction jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and NIST Director Laurie E. Locascio says: \u201cThe innovation sparked by this proposed investment would strengthen America\u2019s technological and research leadership and significantly help enhance our nation\u2019s manufacturing capacity while strengthening communities and creating good-paying jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Intel\u2019s CEO Pat Gelsinger describes this deal as being a \u201cdefining moment\u201d as \u201cAI is supercharging the digital revolution and everything digital needs <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/eus-e43-billion-plan-to-end-semiconductor-shortages\/\">semiconductors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCHIPS Act support will help to ensure that Intel and the U.S. stay at the forefront of the AI era as we build a resilient and sustainable semiconductor supply chain to power our nation\u2019s future.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><b>The semiconductor competition wages on<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>There is fierce competition within the semiconductor industry as the likes of South Korea and the U.S. battle it out to become champions in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the year, in January, <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/samsung-replaced-as-worlds-leading-semiconductor-firm\/\">Counterpoint Research released a study<\/a> showing that South Korean Samsung has been ousted as the biggest earner from semiconductor manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Intel took pole position with $50.5 billion in 2023 revenue, with the U.S. company taking a 9.7% market share that year.
