It\u2019s (almost) showtime! Over 30 years after Tim Burton<\/a>\u2018<\/strong>s\u00a0Beetlejuice<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>came out, a sequel film is finally in the works. Jenna Ortega<\/strong><\/a>, one of Hollywood\u2019s brightest young stars, is set to play the daughter of Winona Ryder<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s character, Lydia Deetz, while Winona will reprise her iconic role. Michael Keaton<\/strong><\/a> is suiting up as Betelgeuse once again. The film, which is officially titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice<\/i>, will be released in theaters on September 6, 2024.<\/p>\n

For those that haven\u2019t seen it, Beetlejuice\u00a0<\/em>follows deceased couple Adam and Barbara Maitland, played by\u00a0Alec Baldwin<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Geena Davis<\/a><\/strong>, who try to scare away a family now living in their house. They make contact with an over-the-top bio-exorcist named Betelgeuse, but his antics only complicate matters.<\/p>\n

Beetlejuice 2<\/em> was officially confirmed in February 2022, per Deadline<\/em><\/a>, with Brad Pitt<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s Plan B Entertainment producing alongside Warner Bros. From the release date to the cast and crew, Hollywood Life <\/strong>has rounded up everything to know about the highly-anticipated sequel.<\/p>\n

\u2018Beetlejuice 2\u2019 Cast & Crew<\/h2>\n

The original\u00a0Beetlejuice<\/em>\u00a0stars Catherine O\u2019Hara<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Jeffrey Jones<\/strong><\/a> as Delia and Charles Deetz, who move into the Maitland\u2019s old house and become terrorized by Betelgeuse. Winona Ryder<\/strong> plays their goth teenage daughter, Lydia Deetz, who becomes friends with the friendly Maitland ghosts.<\/p>\n

So far, Michael Keaton<\/strong>, Winona, Geena, and Catherine are the cast members who are set to return for Beetlejuice 2.<\/em>\u00a0The film wouldn\u2019t be possible without Betelgeuse himself, so thank goodness Michael\u2019s coming back!<\/p>\n

\u201cBeetlejuice<\/em> is the most f***in\u2019 fun you can have working. It\u2019s so fun, it\u2019s so great. And you know what it is? We\u2019re doing it exactly like we did the first movie,\u201d Michael told Empire<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The actor continued, \u201c[Burton] and I were talking about it years and years ago, never telling anybody. We\u2019ve both said we\u2019re doing it many times. We both agreed, if it happens, it has to be done as close to the way we made it the first time. Making stuff up, making stuff happen, improvising and riffing, but literally handmade stuff like people creating things with their hands and building something.\u201d He added, \u201cIt\u2019s the most fun I\u2019ve had working on a movie in I can\u2019t tell you how long.\u201d<\/p>\n

Winona, who currently stars in Netflix\u2019s Stranger Things<\/em><\/a>, previously expressed interest in starring in a Beetlejuice\u00a0<\/em>sequel. \u201cI love Lydia Deetz so much. She was such a huge part of me,\u201d Winona told The Daily Beast<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in 2013. \u201cI would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other cast members\u2019 returns have yet to be announced. Alec\u2019s return is questionable due to the controversy from the Rust\u00a0<\/em>shooting incident<\/a>. Geena Davis\u2019 return is also unclear, but she told PEOPLE<\/em><\/a> in 2022 that she \u201cwould, of course, like to revisit\u201d the character.<\/p>\n

In March 2023, it was reported by The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a> that Wednesday<\/em><\/a> breakout star Jenna Ortega<\/strong> was in talks to join the sequel. Her casting was confirmed in April 2023 at CinemaCon. Jenna will play Astrid in the movie.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how much I\u2019m allowed to say, but I am Lydia Deetz\u2019s daughter, so I\u2019ll give that away,\u201d she told Vanity Fair<\/em>.<\/a> \u201cShe\u2019s weird, but in a different way and not in the way you\u2019d assume, I would say. The relationship between Lydia and Astrid, my character, is very important. And it\u2019s also really strange because it\u2019s a lot of catching up and putting the pieces together of what\u2019s gone on in Lydia\u2019s life since, which is nice, I think, for anybody who loves the character and is excited to see her again.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sequel marks Jenna\u2019s second project with Burton, who directed the Beetlejuice <\/em>sequel. The famous filmmaker has been asked about having Johnny Depp<\/a> <\/strong>star in\u00a0Beetlejuice 2<\/em>\u00a0and didn\u2019t deny anything when he spoke to MTV<\/em> <\/a>about the possibility in 2012. Tim and Johnny enjoy working together and have already brought incredible films to the screen, such as Edward Scissorhands<\/em>, Sleepy Hallow, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory<\/em>, and\u00a0Sweeney Todd<\/em>. However, Johnny\u2019s possible role may be in jeopardy because of his\u00a0defamation trial<\/a>\u00a0against\u00a0Amber Heard<\/a><\/strong>, which has\u00a0impacted his career<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tim is listed as the film\u2019s director per IMDb, and he has confirmed his interest in the past. In 2015, he told Collider\u00a0<\/em><\/a>he would sign on to direct a sequel if it made sense. \u201cThis is the thing, it\u2019s something that I\u2019m interested in, but there\u2019s so many stories [online], dumping Michael Keaton for Johnny Depp and this or that, and I\u2019ve talked to these people and they didn\u2019t wanna hear this so they just made up a story,\u201d he pressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the fact of it is I have talked to Michael and I have talked to Winona, I\u2019ve talked to a few people,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt\u2019s something that I really would like to do in the right circumstances, but it\u2019s one of those films where it has to be right. It\u2019s not a kind of a movie that cries out [for a sequel], it\u2019s not the Beetlejuice<\/em> trilogy. So it\u2019s something that if the elements are right \u2014 because I do love the character and Michael\u2019s amazing as that character, so yeah we\u2019ll see. But there\u2019s nothing concrete yet.\u201d That\u2019s certainly promising!<\/p>\n

Michael shared a similar sentiment when he spoke about the potential sequel in 2016. \u201cIt\u2019s possible that ship has sailed,\u201d he told Variety<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThe only way to do it is to do it right. So much of it was improvised, and so much was beautifully handmade by the artist that is Tim Burton. If you can\u2019t get close to that, you leave it alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Geena revealed that she \u201cwould of course like to revisit\u201d Beetlejuice <\/em>in an October 2022 chat with PEOPLE<\/em><\/a>, but also said she has no information about the sequel and has not yet been contacted about it. \u201cI want to play every character I\u2019ve ever played again,\u201d she added. As mentioned before, Plan B Entertainment and Warner Bros. will produce Beetlejuice<\/em> 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u2018Beetlejuice 2\u2019 Filming News<\/h2>\n

Production began on Beetlejuice 2<\/em> in May 2023 amid the ongoing writers\u2019 strike. Winona Ryder<\/strong> was seen back in character<\/a> as Lydia Deetz on May 18 in Hertfordshire, England. After 35 years, Lydia\u2019s still got her spiky hair and vampy makeup look.<\/p>\n

On July 5, Jenna\u00a0and Winona were spotted filming what appears to be a wedding scene for the sequel<\/a>. Jenna was in full wedding attire, including a white tulle gown with some added pink coloring, a wedding veil, and more. Winona was covered up in a black parka as she prepared to film a scene. Filming wrapped in November 2023.<\/p>\n

The first look at the film dropped in March 2024, per Entertainment Weekly.<\/em><\/a> The scene still showed Michael, Jenna, Winona and Justin Theroux<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Link To The Original \u2018Beetlejuice\u2019<\/h2>\n

Michael McDowell <\/strong>and\u00a0Warren Skaaren<\/strong> wrote the screenplay for the original Beetlejuice<\/em>, while Tim directed. The movie was a massive hit after its 1998 release and even won the Academy Award for Best Makeup in 1999. Its success spawned numerous offshoots, starting with an animated TV series of the same name that ran on ABC, and then Fox, from 1989 to 1991. Tim produced the project. Then, several Beetlejuice\u00a0<\/em>video games were released, starting in 1990. The popular film was also adapted into a Broadway stage musical that opened in April 2019. The show closed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>\u00a0but reopened at the Marquis Theatre in April 2022.<\/p>\n

No plot details have been revealed for\u00a0Beetlejuice 2<\/em>. It would make sense for the sequel to take place many years after the events of the first film. Spoiler alert: Beetlejuice\u00a0<\/em>ends with the Deetzes and Maitlands living in the home harmoniously, while Betelgeuse ends up in the afterlife waiting room and gets his head shrunk by a witch doctor.<\/p>\n

Production Trivia<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s been a long road to\u00a0Beetlejuice 2<\/em>. Plans for the sequel began in 1990 when Tim hired Jonathan Gems\u00a0<\/strong>to write a second movie called\u00a0Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, <\/em>per ScreenRant<\/em><\/a>. It would\u2019ve focused on the Deetzes moving to Hawaii, where they are haunted by a spirit. Michael and Winona agreed to the sequel, however, Tim became distracted with directing Batman Returns<\/em><\/a>, which starred Michael as the iconic caped-crusader. Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian\u00a0<\/em>was eventually shelved entirely by 1997.<\/p>\n

Plans for a different sequel started up in 2011. Warner Bros. hired Seth Grahame-Smith<\/strong>, who worked with Tim on Dark Shadows\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter<\/em>, to write and produce the project. Winona even gushed about the sequel in a 2013 interview with The Daily Beast<\/em><\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m kind of sworn to secrecy but it sounds like it might be happening. It\u2019s 27 years later,\u201d she confirmed. \u201cAnd I have to say, I love Lydia Deetz so much. She was such a huge part of me. I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later.\u201d However, that sequel was also canceled.<\/p>\n

In 2021, Seth himself spoke about the canceled sequel. \u201cIt\u2019s funny, when I had met with Tim about it last, and we\u2019re talking about five years ago at this point, the reason that it\u2019s so hard to get going is because so many people love it and because there are 10 million ways to get that sequel wrong and four ways to get it right,\u201d he explained to Collider<\/em> <\/a>in Oct. 2021. \u201cIt\u2019s such a very fine needle to thread that I certainly like didn\u2019t get it there, on the script side. I didn\u2019t thread the needle. There are things that were cool and some interesting ideas. I\u2019ve certainly emotionally moved on from it and just said, \u2018If it happens someday, it happens.’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
