{"id":215093,"date":"2024-03-20T01:55:40","date_gmt":"2024-03-20T01:55:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/20\/workplace-ai-negatively-impacts-quality-of-life-study-finds\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:20:20","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:20:20","slug":"workplace-ai-negatively-impacts-quality-of-life-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/20\/workplace-ai-negatively-impacts-quality-of-life-study-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Workplace AI negatively impacts quality of life, study finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/voCrLg6bSuKn_miCPd3DOA-900x561.png\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A new study that looks into the influence of artificial intelligence in the workplace has shown negative results, indicating a decline in quality of life while the use of AI rises.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K.-based Institute for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifow.org\/\">Future of Work (IFOW)<\/a> has looked into the link between <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/using-ai-and-big-data-to-create-a-workplace-that-appeals-to-gen-z\/\">worker wellbeing and technology exposure<\/a>, with almost 5,000 people who are representative of the working population being analyzed.<\/p>\n<p>Results have shown that \u201cquality of life negatively correlated with frequency of interaction with newer workplace technologies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/wearable-lets-visually-impaired-users-see-objects-through-ai-mapping\/\">wearables<\/a>, robotics, AI and ML software.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team goes on to say in their <a href=\"https:\/\/assets-global.website-files.com\/64d5f73a7fc5e8a240310c4d\/65eef473a91a69c2d16d97b3_BRIEFING%20-%20Tech%20Exposure%20and%20Workers%20Wellbeing.pdf\">published report<\/a> that \u201cthis is consistent with research that connects such technologies to exacerbated feelings of disempowerment, increased sense of insecurity, task intensification and stress and loss of meaning, as well as anxiety and poorer overall health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not all technologies have a negative impact though, with some actually helping with employee wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResults showed that digital information and communication technologies correlated with improved quality of life, whereas newer and more advanced technologies were correlated with reduced wellbeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So computers and messaging tools have been proven within this research to bring more freedom and flexibility to workers, but the use of smart devices or AI isn\u2019t as well received.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Use of AI in the workplace<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>One of the main focuses of businesses appears to be around the productivity of their employees, with the use of artificial intelligence being implemented to handle repetitive tasks or speed up processes.<\/p>\n<p>Some are even opting to replace workers with AI completely, including the likes of tech giant IBM.
