{"id":214581,"date":"2024-03-18T21:01:03","date_gmt":"2024-03-18T21:01:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/18\/united-ceo-speaks-out-on-boeing-says-5-incidents-in-a-month-have-our-attention-and-have-sharpened-our-focus\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:20:25","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:20:25","slug":"united-ceo-speaks-out-on-boeing-says-5-incidents-in-a-month-have-our-attention-and-have-sharpened-our-focus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/18\/united-ceo-speaks-out-on-boeing-says-5-incidents-in-a-month-have-our-attention-and-have-sharpened-our-focus\/","title":{"rendered":"United CEO speaks out on Boeing, says 5 incidents in a month \u2018have our attention and have sharpened our focus\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/content.fortune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/GettyImages-2023781688_88fb41-e1710794001440.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/united-continental-holdings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">United Airlines<\/a> CEO Scott <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/kirby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Kirby<\/a> is trying to assure customers that he is monitoring closely after five separate clustered incidents involving <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/boeing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Boeing<\/a> planes have left customers rattled.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Over the past month, Boeing planes operated by United <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.cnn.com\/cnn\/2024\/03\/08\/us\/united-airlines-plane-loses-tire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">have lost a tire<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/mar\/08\/boeing-plane-off-runway-houston-texas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">run off the runway<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/lifestyle\/united-airlines-boeing-plane-turned-around-midflight-suffered-hydraulic-leak.amp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">spilled hydraulic fluid<\/a> midflight, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/amp\/rcna142217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">spouted flames from the engine<\/a>. Most recently, a Boeing plane was discovered upon landing to be missing an <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/16\/older-boeing-plane-lands-without-panel\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">\u201cexternal panel.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, in the past few weeks, our airline has experienced a number of incidents that are reminders of the importance of safety,\u201d Kirby said in the statement. \u201cWhile they are all unrelated, I want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the Monday statement, Kirby said the company is reviewing each of the incidents and highlighted already planned measures such as adding an extra day of in-person training for all pilots starting in May and dedicating more resources to \u201csupplier network management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some aviation experts have said the airline incidents such as those affecting United\u2019s Boeing planes are more common than consumers might think and that United <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/boeing-likely-not-to-blame-recent-safety-events-united-2024-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">may share some of the blame with Boeing<\/a>, the manufacturer. Still, there is heightened attention now around all things Boeing. United did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the incidents.<\/p>\n<p>In January a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/us-safety-regulator-release-initial-report-boeing-737-max-cabin-blowout-agency-2024-02-06\/#:~:text=WASHINGTON%2C%20Feb%206%20(Reuters),the%20frightening%20mishap%20took%20shape.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">door plug flew off a Boeing 737-9 MAX mid-flight<\/a>, leading to heightened scrutiny of Boeing by regulators and a large-scale grounding by the FAA that drastically affected United, one of its biggest customers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>United warned that it would report a larger-than-expected loss due to the grounding, and Kirby made it clear in a January interview with CNBC that he was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/01\/23\/united-ceo-casts-doubt-on-boeing-737-max-10-order.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">disappointed<\/a>\u201d in Boeing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need Boeing to succeed. But they\u2019ve been having these consistent manufacturing challenges,\u201d he said. \u201cThey need to take action here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The United CEO added in a subsequent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/01\/28\/united-ceo-reportedly-kickstarts-airbus-talks-amid-boeing-delays.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">call with investors<\/a> that he doesn\u2019t expect United to ever receive many of the more than 200 of the newest model of Boeing 737 MAX that it originally expected to be delivered in 2020, and has adapted its future plans accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoeing is not going to be able to meet their contractual deliveries on at least many of those airplanes. And let\u2019s leave it at that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>United is now looking to Boeing competitor <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/airbus-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Airbus<\/a> to replace 737 MAX 10 orders that are five years behind schedule, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/15\/united-scrambling-airbus-jets-replace-boeing-737-max-10-orders-5-years-behind-schedule\/amp\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Bloomberg reported<\/a> citing people familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Several other airlines, including Southwest and Ryanair are <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/18\/how-bad-summer-travel-boeing-737-airlines-flight-prices\/amp\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">looking for alternative<\/a> aircraft as Boeing\u2019s 737s continue to face delays.
