They did tell the US news outlet that it \u201cbuys smaller technology companies from time to time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the big players in the Ontario-based company, Alexander Wong, has joined Apple as a director in its AI group as part of the deal. He helped to build the startup and works as an AI researcher at the University of Waterloo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DarwinAI is the latest in a long list of similar acquisitions as Apple reportedly purchased 32 AI startups last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is DarwinAI?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DarwinAI is best known for <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/category\/ai\/\">developing AI technology<\/a> that can visually inspect components during the manufacturing process. They\u2019re said to have served customers in a range of industries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded in 2017, the company said its<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> initial focus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was on disrupting \u2018the electronics manufacturing industry by improving the efficiency of Printed Circuit Board Assembly production through their ground-breaking technology.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, they raised more than $15 million across six funding rounds. They received investment from 12 investors, including the likes of Honeywell Ventures and Inovia Capital, amongst other venture capital firms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20221215005002\/en\/DarwinAI-brings-AI-powered-Visual-Quality-Inspection-to-market-and-announces-a-funding-round-led-by-BDC-Capital-to-accelerate-growth\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> following the announcement of a funding round in December 2022, one of the co-founders said the \u201ctransformation is just beginning,\u201d as they planned to raise money to help continue building advanced features.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why did Apple buy DarwinAI?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no secret that Apple is<a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/openais-chatgpt-now-has-multilingual-read-out-loud-feature\/\"> currently trailing behind other industry titans<\/a> who have already made the steps into the world of AI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The iPhone maker is now playing catch-up, with Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook promising that Apple will \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-02-28\/apple-shareholders-vote-down-request-for-ai-transparency-report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">break new ground<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d in AI this year.
