The buyer is a group of private investors under the umbrella of Beacon Interactive, which is run by Saber co-founder Matthew Karch.<\/p>\n<p>Although Embracer says the deal is worth $247 million, it&#8217;s actually worth around $500 million once liabilities are factored in, according to <em>Bloomberg\u2019s<\/em> <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jasonschreier\/status\/1768212177888948349?s=46\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Jason Schreier;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a>. That\u2019s because Beacon is said to have <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jasonschreier\/status\/1768216189661024581?s=46\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:taken up an option;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a> to buy 4A Games and Zen Studios (the developers of the Metro and Zen Pinball series, respectively) as well.<\/p>\n<p>As you might imagine given those latter points, the details of the sale are a little convoluted. Along with 4A and Zen, the sale includes all Saber-branded studios, Nimble Giant (<em>Star Trek: Infinite<\/em>), 3D animation studio Digic, support studio Fractured Byte, PR agency Sandbox Strategies, Mad Head Games (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/prime-matter-koch-media-embracer-group-publisher-announcement-190031870.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Scars Above;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em><\/em><\/a>), Slipgate Ironworks (<em>Graven<\/em>), New World Interactive (the Insurgency series) and publisher 3D Realms.<\/p>\n<p>Embracer is hanging onto 34 Big Things (<em>Redout<\/em>), Shiver (which ported <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/mortal-kombat-movie-dlc-skin-pack-180634132.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mortal Kombat 11;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em><\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>to Switch), Snapshot (<em>Phoenix Point<\/em>) and Aspyr, which is behind the recent remaster of the original Tomb Raider trilogy and <em>Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection,<\/em> which came out on Thursday. The publisher is also retaining Tripwire (<em>Maneater<\/em>), Beamdog (<em>Mythforce<\/em>), Tuxedo Labs (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/teardown-steam-workshop-support-mods-103553042.html\/ec566560-7d9b-11eb-ae5d-d84879bec611\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Teardown;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em><\/em><\/a>) and Demiurge (<em>Sega Heroes<\/em>). Embracer-owned publisher Plaion will keep the long-term license and publishing rights for PC and console games in the Metro series too.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Beacon is scooping up at least 38 ongoing game development projects, along with some proprietary engine technology and game tools. Saber says it will retain 14 games, including <em>Killing Floor 3. <\/em>According to <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:8;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/stephentotilo\/status\/1768250775522705885\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reporter Stephen Totilo;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:8;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">reporter Stephen Totilo<\/a>, Beacon is taking on 2,950 workers and Embracer is retaining 800 (it has 14,140 workers overall).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Embracer is now able to discontinue all operations in Russia, according to a previous board decision, while safeguarding many developer jobs under new independent ownership,&#8221; Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors said. &#8220;At the same time, we keep key companies, valuable IPs and future publishing rights.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Embracer bought Saber for $525 million four years ago and it slotted some later purchases, including Demiurge and New World Interactive, into that division. Since last summer, Embracer has been on a major cost-cutting drive after an <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/embracer-announces-layoffs-and-game-cancellations-after-a-2-billion-deal-falls-through-144311854.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:expected investment of $2 billion;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> (reportedly from a group backed by Saudi Arabia\u2019s sovereign wealth fund) fell apart. It also canceled 29 unannounced games over a six-month period last year.
