According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/health-topics\/alcohol#tab=tab_1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Europe has the highest proportion of drinkers and the highest intake of alcohol in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factors that lead certain people, or even certain populations to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcoholrehabguide.org\/alcohol\/causes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vary from biological and environmental, to social and psychological. Europeans particularly may be more genetically predisposed to eating fatty foods and consuming alcohol due to a switch in what is called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/europeans-evolved-to-drink-more-2313665.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">galanin gene<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social drinking habits across Europe carry significant weight as well. They inform the identities, economies, and cultures of many European societies. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sirc.org\/publik\/drinking3.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interestingly argues that it is not per capita consumption that influences alcoholism, but rather the cultural beliefs surrounding it. Societies that hold positive beliefs about liquor, mainly defined as \u2018wet\u2019 and Mediterranean, are less likely to face the same substance abuse problems as their \u2018dry\u2019 and \u2018Nordic\u2019 counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/303042899_Dry_and_Wet_Cultures_in_the_Age_of_Globalization\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Owing to globalization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8536155\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the homogenization of drinking cultures across Europe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the way Europeans drink is changing over time and is becoming noticeable with the new generation. Underage drinking has dropped <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spirits.eu\/media\/press-releases\/spiritseurope-welcomes-decline-in-alcohol-consumption-among-youth-in-europe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significantly, by 22% among youth in Europe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and while these numbers are far from perfect, their implications are promising. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7612362\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public policies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9265679\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">redefined social norms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and newfound awareness of mental health are causing youth to stray further away from the drinking trend, as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/02\/03\/gen-z-prohibition-abstinence-economy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 36% of Gen Z<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> choose to go \u201csober\u201d for psychological, as well<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12889-022-14760-y\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as financial reasons.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older Europeans, however, are less keen on switching over to tea and therapy. Even though EU prevention strategies are put forth to mitigate alcohol dependency and its social impacts, alcohol sales still sway our economic systems, affecting every aspect of our lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Today\u2019s guests<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>P\u00e9ter S\u00e1rosi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a human rights activist and drug policy expert.
