They\u2019re not supposed to like everything you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p><iframe title=\"Lily Allen: Children &quot;Ruined My Career&quot; | The View\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zodSyvBAgpA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Goldberg was speaking to fellow presenters Sunny Hostin, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sara Haines, and Joy Behar, about the toll having children can take on a mother\u2019s career after the British popstar Lily Allen revealed on <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/gb\/podcast\/lily-allen-and-miquita-oliver-on-fame-rock-bottom\/id1580708942?i=1000648865909\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">a podcast<\/a> that having children \u201ctotally ruined\u201d hers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy children ruined my career. I love them and they complete me, but in terms of pop stardom, totally ruined it,\u201d said the <em>Smile<\/em> singer, who is married to <em>Stranger Things<\/em> actor David Harbour.\u00a0\u201cIt really annoys me when people say you can have it all because, quite frankly, you can\u2019t.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people choose their career over their children and that\u2019s their prerogative,\u201d Allen added.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Goldberg, who falls in the latter category of Allen\u2019s comments, concluded that she \u201chopes\u201d she has given her daughter Alexandrea Martin a better life because she prioritized her acting career over being a present parent\u2014and as a result, went on to star in blockbuster movies and bag <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/11\/10\/whoopi-goldberg-gen-z-millennials-housing-ladder-american-dreamwork-four-hours-day-lazy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">$8 million per year for her ABC chat show.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But as Behar poignantly asked the panel: \u201cDo you think men are asking themselves this question?\u201d to which they simultaneously agreed that men were not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can working mums really \u2018have it all\u2019?<\/h2>\n<p>It was <em>Cosmopolitan<\/em> magazine that came up with the \u201cyou can have it all\u201d mantra\u2014the corner office, children in tow, and not a hair out of place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But even its former editor-in-chief admitted not only is that unrealistic but that it\u2019s a \u201cvery dangerous\u201d norm to perpetuate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t do it all properly, all at the same time,\u201d Farrah Storr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementtoday.co.uk\/cosmos-farrah-storr-its-lonely-top-cant-just-slot-in\/women-in-business\/article\/1494200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">said<\/a><em> <\/em>when she was still at the helm of the women\u2019s title. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI decided not to have children\u2014I just didn\u2019t think I could do my job with kids in tow\u2014and that\u2019s been a huge personal sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Holly Wilbanks, the founder of the Wilbanks Consulting Group, recently told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pittsburgh\/video\/taking-care-of-business-how-women-are-forging-their-own-paths-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">CBS News<\/a>: \u201cThe concept that we can do it all, I think many of us have realized is not a realistic concept.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead, what women today are trying to do is figure out what\u2019s important to them, what they value, and how they can structure their focus and their time around those things\u2014and quite frankly, for a lot of women, that means making choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If even those with huge incomes at their disposal to chuck at childcare are admitting it\u2019s hard to excel at both motherhood and work at the same time, then what hope does the regular working mom have?<\/p>\n<p>About a quarter of a million mothers in Britain <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2023\/11\/06\/motherhood-penalty-250000-moms-quit-jobs-childcare-pressures-toxic-attitudes\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">have left their jobs<\/a> in recent years because of the difficulty of juggling a career and childcare, according to the Fawcett Society.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, women who do remain in the workforce after having children are financially punished: Mothers experience a 60% drop in earnings compared to fathers in the decade following the birth of a first child, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/issues\/c-suite-insights\/the-leadership-agenda\/the-motherhood-penalty-is-widening-the-pay-gap.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">according to PwC.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Over 40% of the mothers the Fawcett Society surveyed had turned down a promotion or career development opportunity because they worried it would not fit with childcare arrangements.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Men, on the other hand, see their <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2023\/03\/parenthood-stereotypes-gender-pay-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">pay increase after becoming fathers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>These statistics may only grow starker if return-to-office mandates continue gathering pace. <\/p>\n<p>Women in the U.K. are putting in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-08-13\/return-to-office-may-reverse-uk-women-s-gains-on-working-hours\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">more time at work than ever<\/a> because hybrid working has made it easier to work around childcare.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But as some firms <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/03\/12\/boots-return-to-office-5-day-ceo-women-working-moms\/?asdfgh\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">demand workers make a full-time return to the office<\/a>, working moms will disproportionately have to weigh up whether they can afford to pay more for
