{"id":213266,"date":"2024-03-14T07:39:54","date_gmt":"2024-03-14T07:39:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/14\/5-top-pulitzer-prize-finalists-used-ai-in-their-work\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:20:39","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:20:39","slug":"5-top-pulitzer-prize-finalists-used-ai-in-their-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/14\/5-top-pulitzer-prize-finalists-used-ai-in-their-work\/","title":{"rendered":"5 top Pulitzer Prize finalists used AI in their work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Z9G455M6RS6qQ3t3if57kQ-719x719.png\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Each year, the Pulitzer Prize award is given to those in newspaper, magazine, online journalism, literature, and musical composition for their achievements.<\/p>\n<p>This year, for 2024, amongst the 45 journalists who have been selected as finalists, five people\u2019s entries are AI-powered.<\/p>\n<p>While the extent of the <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/over-half-uk-students-using-ai-for-assignments-finds-study\/\">use of artificial intelligence in their submissions<\/a> isn\u2019t yet known, it is confirmed that the technology was used at various stages of their reporting processes.<\/p>\n<p>Pulitzer Prize administrator Marjorie Miller told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2024\/03\/five-of-this-years-pulitzer-finalists-are-ai-powered\/?utm_source=www.therundown.ai&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=ai-developer-codes-websites-by-itself\">Nieman Lab<\/a> that the board first began discussing how they\u2019ll react to AI early last year: \u201cAI tools at the time had an \u2018oh no, the devil is coming\u2019 reputation\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miller goes on to suggest the board\u2019s approach from the beginning has always been exploratory and they\u2019ve never considered restricting this as it could discourage newsrooms from \u2018engaging with innovative technology.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Often regarded as the highest award and honor in journalism, the Pulitzer Prize has now added a disclosure requirement for all journalism entrants. They must now share the use of AI during the process of researching, reporting, or telling their submissions.<\/p>\n<p>More details about this usage may well be released when the finalists and winners are announced on May 8, 2024.<\/p>\n<h2><b>How the journalism industry is reacting to AI usage<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>As this technology becomes more prominent across different sectors, it\u2019s understandable that award organizations and publishers are eager to put appropriate policies in place.<\/p>\n<p>The George Polk Awards are considering how they\u2019ll adapt rules for technology. Awards curator John Darnton spoke with Nieman Lab about his opinion: \u201cIf [generative] AI is an essential part of the whole project, I would look askance at it as an entry\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost investigative projects rely on some kind of moral judgment.
