What Is Multiple Sclerosis?<\/h2>\n

Multiple sclerosis is a disease of the brain and spinal cord, where the immune system attacks the protective sheath that covers nerve fibers, according to the Mayo Clinic<\/a>. MS causes difficulty in walking, tingling, partial or complete loss of vision, fatigue, slurred speech, and cognitive problems. There is no cure yet for MS. Treatments include medicines, equipment like braces or canes, and rehabilitation activities, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Another celebrity who has MS is Christina\u2019s The Sweetest Thing <\/em>co-star Selma Blair<\/strong><\/a>. Selma, who has been battling MS since 2018, has been supporting Christina<\/a> ever since the latter actress learned she has the autoimmune disease.<\/p>\n

Christina\u2019s diagnosis resulted in a five-month production pause on Dead to Me\u00a0<\/em>season 3. After the news of Christina\u2019s sickness broke, Netflix told The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>they\u00a0would be respecting Christina\u2019s wishes of privacy and that show would be put on hold. \u201cWe love and support Christina and respect her privacy as she takes the time and space she needs in this moment,\u201d the streamer said.<\/p>\n

Christina elaborated more on her MS diagnosis for the first time in an interview with The\u00a0New York Times<\/i><\/a> in November 2022. The actress revealed that she gained 40 pounds and can\u2019t walk without a cane<\/a> because of her condition. Christina also admitted that she\u2019s \u201cnever going to accept\u201d that she has MS and said she\u2019s \u201cpissed\u201d about it.<\/p>\n

Christina, who filmed most of Dead to Me <\/em>season 3 after her diagnosis, confirmed in the NYT <\/em>interview that there were subtle signs of MS such as balance issues while she was filming the first season of the show<\/a>, but she brushed the issues off and thought nothing of it. \u201cI wish I had paid attention. But who was I to know?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Christina uses a cane to walk around because of her condition. She made her first public appearance<\/a> after her diagnosis at her Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony on November 14, 2022. Christina held back tears during her speech, where she thanked her daughter\u00a0Sadie <\/strong>and even cracked a joke about having MS. \u201cOh, by the way, I have a disease. Did you not notice? I\u2019m not even wearing shoes,\u201d Christina said. Her Dead to Me\u00a0<\/em>co-star\u00a0Linda Cardellini<\/strong><\/a> gave a speech dedicated to Christina at the Walk of Fame ceremony.<\/p>\n

Christina appeared at her first award show after her diagnosis at the Screen Actors Guild Awards<\/a> on February 26, 2023. She attended the event with her daughter<\/a> and used a cane to walk down the red carpet. Christina was nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Jen Harding in Dead to Me<\/em>. It\u2019s likely that the 2023 SAGs were the final award show that Christina ever attended as an actor. That\u2019s because she\u2019s hinted that Dead To Me<\/em> was her final acting role because of her condition.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now, I couldn\u2019t imagine getting up at 5 a.m. and spending 12 to 14 hours on a set. I don\u2019t have that in me at this moment,\u201d she told\u00a0Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a> in February 2023. However, Christina said she wants to keep working in Hollywood by producing, developing, and \u201cdoing a s*** ton of voiceovers to make some cash to make sure that my daughter\u2019s fed and we\u2019re homed.\u201d<\/p>\n

In January 2024, Christina presented two awards at the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards, and she got a standing ovation the moment she approached the stage. Two months later, she opened up to PEOPLE<\/em><\/a> about how she lives with her condition. In the candid interview, Christina revealed that she has to wear diapers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, you pee \u2026 in your pants. Because you probably can\u2019t get to the bathroom in time,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, yeah, diapers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
