After all, if you shoot for the moon and miss, at least you\u2019ll land with the stars. But Nvidia\u2019s CEO Jensen Huang wants privileged Gen Z grads to lower their expectations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cPeople with very high expectations have very low resilience\u2014and unfortunately, resilience matters in success,\u201d Huang said during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lXLBTBBil2U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">recent interview<\/a> with Stanford Graduate School of Business. \u201cOne of my great advantages is that I have very low expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, as the billionaire boss pointed out, those at elite institutions like Stanford probably have higher expectations for their future than your average Joe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The university is one of the most selective in the United States\u2014it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topuniversities.com\/where-to-study\/north-america\/united-states\/ranked-top-100-us-universities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">ranks third best in the country<\/a>, according to the QS World University Rankings, and the few students who get picked to study there are charged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/best-colleges\/stanford-university-1305\/paying\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">$62,484<\/a> in tuition fees for the premium, compared to the average <a href=\"https:\/\/educationdata.org\/average-cost-of-college#:~:text=The%20average%20cost%20of%20attendance,or%20%24223%2C360%20over%204%20years.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">$26,027 per annum cost.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But, unfortunately for those saddled with student debt, not even the best universities in the world can teach you resilience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know how to teach it to you except for I hope suffering happens to you,\u201d Huang added.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Huang overcame adversity to succeed<\/h2>\n<p>Huang\u2019s advice for America\u2019s next-gen elite comes from a place of experience: His life now is a world away from his childhood, which was, by his own admission, steeped in adversity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The tech genius\u2014who with a net worth of $80 billion is one of the world\u2019s wealthiest people\u2014was born in Taiwan in 1963 and spent the bulk of his early life in Thailand, before moving to the U.S. at 9 years old.<\/p>\n<p>His serendipitous Stateside move came after his dad, who worked for an air conditioner manufacturer, did some training in the country and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/05\/06\/nvidia-ceo-my-mom-taught-me-english-a-random-10-words-at-a-time.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">set his sights on the American dream.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was fortunate that I grew up with my parents providing a condition for us to be successful on the one hand,\u201d he said. \u201cBut there were plenty of opportunities for setbacks and suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One example of Huang\u2019s hardship was his daily high school experience: The teenager had to cross a dangerous footbridge with missing planks over a river to get to his public school in Kentucky where he was then relentlessly tormented.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way you described Chinese people back then was \u2018Ch-nks,\u2019 \u201d Huang previously told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2023\/12\/04\/how-jensen-huangs-nvidia-is-powering-the-ai-revolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \"><em>New Yorker<\/em><\/a>, adding that bullies even tried to toss him off the bridge.<\/p>\n<p>In the Stanford interview, he also credited his success and work ethic with his first job at Denny\u2019s where he was <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/12\/billionaire-nvidia-ceo-first-job-dennys\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=advanced_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">the \u201cbest dishwasher<\/a>\u201d, before getting promoted to busboy and giving that his \u201cbest\u201d also.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p><iframe title=\"Jensen Huang, Founder and CEO of NVIDIA\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lXLBTBBil2U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI never left the station empty-handed. I never came back empty-handed. I was very efficient,\u201d Huang added. \u201cAnyways, eventually I became a CEO. I\u2019m still working on being a good CEO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally, it was at Denny\u2019s where he cooked up the idea for a company that specialized in computer chips to render graphics over a Super Bird sandwich with his two friends Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem. The trio went on to co-found Nvidia and the rest is history.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018I wish upon you ample doses of pain and suffering\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>For those fortunate enough to never have personally experienced hardship growing up, Huang doesn\u2019t have any advice on how to welcome more of it into your life now.
