Following ongoing guest complaints about hidden cameras<\/a>, Airbnb<\/a> has updated its policy and prohibited the use of any indoor security cameras in properties it lists for rent.<\/p>\n The leading vacation rental company says the change is meant to \u201cprioritize the privacy of our community.\u201d<\/p>\n Airbnb has historically been ok with security cameras in common areas, such as hallways and living rooms, but did require that owners disclose their location. The majority of listings, the company says, did not report having a security camera on premises.<\/p>\n Now, however, no cameras will be allowed indoors. And the rules surrounding outdoor security cameras are being made more comprehensive. Doorbell cameras and noise decibel monitors will still be allowed on Airbnb properties, but other outdoor cameras must be disclosed, including their location, before guests book the property. Those cameras also cannot monitor any indoor space or areas \u201cwhere there\u2019s a greater expectation of privacy,\u201d such as an outdoor shower or sauna.<\/p>\n The new policies will go into effect on April 30.<\/p>\n \u201cOur goal was to create new, clear rules that provide our community with greater clarity about what to expect on Airbnb,\u201d said Juniper Downs, Airbnb\u2019s head of community policy and partnerships in a statement<\/a>. \u201cThese changes were made in consultation with our guests, Hosts and privacy experts, and we\u2019ll continue to seek feedback to help ensure our policies work for our global community.\u201d<\/p>\n The ban on cameras won\u2019t go into effect before the company sees a huge surge in customers for the upcoming total solar eclipse.
