This time, authors are suing NVIDIA over its <a data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/nvidia-ai-foundations-customizable-genewrative-ai-cloud-service-161505625.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:AI platform NeMo;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">AI platform NeMo<\/a>, a language model that allows businesses to create and train their own chatbots, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2024\/03\/novelists-sue-nvidia-to-stop-spread-of-ai-models-trained-on-copyrighted-books\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ars Technica;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>Ars Technica<\/em><\/a> reported. They claim the company trained it on a controversial dataset that illegally used their books without consent.<\/p>\n<p>Authors Abdi Nazemian, Brian Keene and Stewart O\u2019Nan demanded a jury trial and asked Nvidia to pay damages and destroy all copies of the Books3 dataset used to power NeMo large language models (LLMs). They claim that dataset copied a shadow library called Bibliotek consisting of 196,640 pirated books.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In sum, NVIDIA has admitted training its NeMo Megatron models on a copy of The Pile dataset,&#8221; the claim states. &#8220;Therefore, NVIDIA necessarily also trained its NeMo Megatron models on a copy of Books3, because Books3 is part of The Pile. Certain books written by Plaintiffs are part of Books3\u2014 including the Infringed Works\u2014and thus NVIDIA necessarily trained its NeMo Megatron models on one or more copies of the Infringed Works, thereby directly infringing the copyrights of the Plaintiffs.<\/p>\n<p>In response, NVIDIA told <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/nvidia-says-nemo-ai-platform-complies-with-copyright-law-after-authors-complaint-4b8d4a92\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Wall Street Journal;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a> that &#8220;we respect the rights of all content creators and believe we created NeMo in full compliance with copyright law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last year, OpenAI and Microsoft were hit with a <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/openai-and-microsoft-hit-with-copyright-lawsuit-from-non-fiction-authors-101505740.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:copyright lawsuit;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">copyright lawsuit<\/a> from nonfiction authors, claiming the companies made money off their works but refused to pay them. A similar lawsuit was <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/more-non-fiction-authors-are-suing-openai-and-microsoft-103046599.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:launched;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">launched<\/a> earlier this year.
