{"id":212382,"date":"2024-03-12T07:47:33","date_gmt":"2024-03-12T07:47:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/12\/lufthansa-cabin-crew-set-to-strike-adding-to-german-carriers-woes\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:20:48","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:20:48","slug":"lufthansa-cabin-crew-set-to-strike-adding-to-german-carriers-woes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/12\/lufthansa-cabin-crew-set-to-strike-adding-to-german-carriers-woes\/","title":{"rendered":"Lufthansa cabin crew set to strike, adding to German carrier&#8217;s woes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/content.fortune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/GettyImages-2065483927-e1710172746865.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lufthansa is facing strikes wherever it looks\u2014whether that\u2019s down on the ground, or inside its planes.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Over 120,000 Lufthansa passengers will be impacted on Tuesday and Wednesday as the German airline\u2019s cabin crew goes on strike, fighting for a 15% wage hike.<\/p>\n<p>That comes less than a month after Lufthansa\u2019s ground staff also went <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-02-19\/lufthansa-warns-germany-ground-crew-strike-set-to-hit-100-000-passengers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">on strike<\/a>, throwing the travel plans of over 100,000 passengers into chaos. At the time, the labor union Verdi organized the industrial action to secure a 12.5% pay bump as well as a lump-sum inflation payout.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, an agreement between the union of ground staff workers and Lufthansa still hasn\u2019t been signed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, cabin crew members (represented by German trade union UFO) will also strike, resulting in 1,000 canceled flights and disrupted travel for thousands of passengers in Frankfurt and Munich airports, Lufthansa said in a statement to <em>Fortune<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The strike will start at 4 a.m. and end at 11 p.m. on each of those days. It includes 18,000 Lufthansa crew members and roughly 1,000 Lufthansa Cityline members, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-lufthansa-faces-fresh-strike-from-different-union\/a-68481778\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \"><em>DW <\/em>reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The airline is helping rebook passengers or is offering them railway vouchers as an alternate mode of transportation, the airline\u2019s spokesperson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lufthansa\u2019s strikes have hurt travelers\u2019 plans but are also hurting its business dearly. In the German carrier\u2019s earnings, released last Thursday, it highlighted that the strikes would hit its first-quarter operating profits due to the costly labor dispute. As for the company\u2019s full year target, Lufthansa said it\u2019ll try to get \u201cas close as possible\u201d to its 8% operating margin target, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/lufthansa-drops-2024-operating-margin-target-76-costs-rise-2024-03-07\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Reuters reported<\/a> (2023\u2019s figure for that metric was 7.6%).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe uncompromising strikes by the trade union Verdi are damaging our guests, the company and ultimately our employees,\u201d Michael Niggemann, chief human resources officer and labor director at Lufthansa, said <a href=\"https:\/\/investor-relations.lufthansagroup.com\/en\/news\/financial-news\/investor-relations-financial-news\/date\/2024\/03\/07\/lufthansa-group-erwirtschaftet-im-jahr-2023-einen-operativen-gewinn-in-hoehe-von-27-milliarden-euro-und-investiert-so-viel-wie-noch-nie-fuer-ihre-gaeste.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">in a statement<\/a> along with the earnings release.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are always open to short-term negotiations with Verdi \u2013 however, we bear joint responsibility for finding good solutions. Verdi must suspend strike action and be prepared to enter into constructive negotiations without preconditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strikes aren\u2019t a hurdle for the large carrier alone\u2014Germany\u2019s central bank warned last month that strikes, which have hit <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/01\/12\/how-bad-german-economy-recession-farmer-protests-rail-strikes\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">railway services<\/a>, could negatively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/german-central-bank-warns-of-recession-citing-strikes\/a-68300874\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">impact Germany\u2019s productivity<\/a> as it reels from an economic crisis.
