Lily Gladstone<\/strong> is a force to be reckoned with in Killers of the Flower Moon<\/em><\/a>, Martin Scorsese\u2019s <\/strong>latest epic. The 37-year-old actor stars alongside Leonardo DiCaprio<\/strong><\/a> and Robert De Niro<\/strong><\/a> in the Western drama, based on David Grann\u2019s<\/strong> non-fiction novel, about the Oklahoma murders in the Osage Nation during the 1920s.<\/p>\n

Lily, whose pronouns are she\/they, became the first Native American actress to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar<\/a>. The actor recently won the Golden Globe<\/a> for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama. <\/span>Lily has been a star on the rise for quite some time now, and they\u2019ve been catapulted into the spotlight with this life-changing role. Lily Earned an Oscar Nomination For \u2018Killers of the Flower Moon\u2019<\/h2>\n

Lily plays the film version of the real-life Mollie Burkhart<\/strong> in Killers of the Flower Moon<\/em>. Mollie was married to Ernest Burkhart<\/strong>, played by Leo in the film. Mollie and her family became the target of a plot to kill Native Americans who held powerful oil rights in the 1920s. Although she lost<\/a> to Emma Stone<\/strong><\/a>, Lily\u2019s stellar acting skills are expected to earn her more groundbreaking roles in the near future.<\/p>\n

\u201cLily is absolutely astonishing in this movie,\u201d Leo told British Vogue<\/em><\/a>. \u201cShe carries the entire film and the story.\u201d The Oscar winner also revealed that Scorsese knew immediately that Lily was the perfect person to play Mollie. \u201cI\u2019ve never known [Scorsese] meet somebody and then immediately afterwards have this gravitational pull and instinct to say, \u2018Let\u2019s not wait another minute,’\u201d the actor said.<\/p>\n

After the Oscar nominations were announced, Lily called into TODAY with Hoda & Jenna<\/em> to react to her nod. \u201cIt feels like all of the things. I was so excited,\u201d she said. \u201cI didn\u2019t think I was going to cry, but I did. I was on the phone with my folks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily added, \u201cIt\u2019s a dream that you have when you\u2019re young, and you have aspirations to act. But then when you get in the flow of it, you\u2019re just happy to be able to do this thing. So it\u2019s just, it\u2019s beyond anything I could have hoped for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily Is Native American<\/h2>\n

Lily grew up on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana. She is of Siksikaitsitapi and NiM\u00ediPuu heritage. \u201cI lived in the reservations until I was 11, when we moved for lack of economic opportunities,\u201d she told The Guardian<\/em><\/a>. Lily is distantly related to Red Crow<\/strong>, a prominent Kainai leader and treaty chief in the 1800s.<\/p>\n

The actor\u2019s use of she\/they pronouns stems from her Indigenous heritage. \u201cMy pronoun use is partly a way of decolonizing gender for myself,\u201d Lily told PEOPLE<\/em><\/a>. The actor recalled her boy cousins were misgendered because they \u201cwore their hair long.\u201d Lily continued, \u201cIt happens to a lot of kids, I think, especially Native boys leaving a community where long hair is celebrated [and then] just kind of getting teased for it. So I remember back then being like, everybody should just be they.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily Almost Gave Up on Acting<\/h2>\n

Before landing their Killers of the Flower Moon<\/em> role, Lily was about to leave acting behind and start a new career protecting indigenous bumblebees. \u201cI had, like, almost a parental love of bees at that time,\u201d Lily told British Vogue<\/em>. She also revealed that she was \u201cliving at home\u201d with her parents prior to Killers of the Flower Moon<\/em>. \u201cI thought, I don\u2019t want to move to LA, because I\u2019m kind of an atypical actor. I think it\u2019s going to be hard for me to find a place if I take that route,\u201d Lily said.<\/p>\n

Lily\u2019s Film Debut Was in 2013<\/h2>\n

Lily played Sunshine First Raise in the 2013 film Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian.\u00a0<\/em>She starred alongside Kristen Stewart<\/strong><\/a> in the 2016 film Certain Women<\/em> and earned an Independent Spirit Awards nomination for Best Supporting Female. Lily played Roxanne for several episodes of Billions<\/em> and appeared in two episodes of the critically acclaimed series Reservation Dogs<\/em>. In addition to Killers of the Flower Moon<\/em>, Lily is also receiving praise for their performance in The Unknown Country<\/em>. Lily\u2019s next project is the Under the Bridge<\/em> Hulu series.<\/p>\n

Lily Went to College<\/h2>\n

Lily attended the University of Montana. The actor graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting\/Directing and a minor in Native American Studies.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
