Oppenheimer<\/em>, the biographical film about the inventor of the atomic bomb, picked up a total of seven Academy Awards<\/a>, including best picture and best director for Christopher Nolan.<\/p>\n Cillian Murphy won the best actor award for his portrayal of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. Robert Downey Jr. picked up the best supporting actor award for playing his nemesis Lewis Strauss.\u00a0<\/p>\n The three-hour film from Comcast<\/a> Corp.\u2019s Universal<\/a> Pictures\u00a0led the nominations<\/a>\u00a0with 13. It also won for film editing, cinematography and score.\u00a0<\/p>\n Emma Stone won best actress for her work in\u00a0Poor Things<\/em>, from Walt Disney<\/a> Co.\u2019s Searchlight Pictures division. The twist on the Frankenstein story took home four trophies in total, including production design, costumes and makeup. She beat out Lily Gladstone, who was in line to become the first Native American to win an Oscar for her role in Apple<\/a> Inc.\u2019s\u00a0Killers of the Flower Moon<\/em>.<\/p>\n The awards marked a big night for Hollywood\u2019s old guard<\/a> and a disappointment for streaming companies. While Universal and Disney\u2019s Searchlight scored with\u00a0Oppenheimer<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Poor Things<\/em>, respectively, Netflix<\/a> Inc. won only for a film short and Apple was shut out. Amazon<\/a>.com Inc.\u2019s MGM distributed\u00a0American Fiction<\/em>, winner of best adapted screenplay.<\/p>\n Da\u2019Vine Joy Randolph\u2019s award for best supporting actress kicked off the ceremony. Randolph won for her portrayal of a cook at a prep school in the Universal\/Focus Features film\u00a0The Holdovers<\/em>. Studio Ghibli\u2019s\u00a0The Boy and the Heron<\/em>\u00a0snagged best animated feature. Director Wes Anderson won his first Oscar for the live action short film\u00a0The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar<\/em>, distributed by Netflix<\/p>\n The French film\u00a0Anatomy of a Fall<\/em>\u00a0won for best original screenplay.<\/p>\n The documentary feature award went to\u00a020 Days in Mariupol<\/em>, about Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine. It was the first ever Oscar awarded to a Ukrainian filmmaker. The Nazi concentration camp drama\u00a0The Zone of Interest<\/em>, from the independent studio A24, won best international film.<\/p>\n The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences\u2019 96th annual ceremony was hosted this year by late night star Jimmy Kimmel. It began at about 4 p.m. local time in Los Angeles and aired on Disney\u2019s ABC network.\u00a0<\/p>\n Protesters chanting \u201ccease-fire now\u201d and \u201clong live Palestine\u201d demonstrated on Hollywood Boulevard outside the Dolby Theatre where the ceremony is held. They were kept behind chain-link fencing, with a heavy presence of police in riot gear after the authorities ordered them to disperse.<\/p>\n On betting sites such as FanDuel and DraftKings<\/a>,\u00a0Oppenheimer<\/em>\u00a0was such a favorite for best picture that gamblers needed to put up\u00a0$5,000<\/a>\u00a0just to win $100.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t think that there\u2019ll be an upset, not because the other movies aren\u2019t great, but because none of the other movies feel like they\u2019ve captured the consensus vote as an alternative,\u201d Michael Schulman, the author of\u00a0Oscar Wars: A History of Hollywood in Gold, Sweat and Tears<\/em>, said before the ceremony.<\/p>\n In Nolan, the industry rallied behind a director who\u2019s been a\u00a0champion<\/a>\u00a0of showing movies in theaters and shooting them\u00a0on film<\/a>, rather than digitally. He\u2019d been nominated several times before but had never won an Oscar.<\/p>\n Oppenheimer<\/em>, a period piece that has grossed $954 million in theaters, harkens back to an era when\u00a0big Hollywood productions<\/a>\u00a0took home the industry\u2019s top awards, and not the smaller budget, art-house films that have dominated more recently. The picture picked up multiple trophies leading up to Sunday\u2019s ceremony, including best drama at the Golden Globes and best film from the Producers Guild<\/a> of America and the British film academy.<\/p>\n Last year, A24\u2019s\u00a0Everything Everywhere All at Once\u00a0<\/em>was nominated 11 times and won seven.<\/p>\n The nominations pitted two of last year\u2019s highest-grossing films against each other.\u00a0Barbie<\/em>, the biggest box office draw in 2023, was also a contender for best picture.
