I don\u2019t want Facebook, who cheated in the last Election, doing better. They are a true Enemy of the People.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Trump, this is definitely a change of tune. In August 2020, he told reporters that he was planning to the app, and even issued an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jackbrewster\/2020\/08\/06\/trump-issues-executive-orders-against-chinese-owners-of-tiktok-and-wechat\/?sh=3fe2fcfac06c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> executive orde<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r to do just that in the days following. This order, which gave ByteDance 45 days to sell the app or face a ban in the US, but this order was later blocked by numerous federal judges. This means that Trump\u2019s proposed ban never happened, as the executive order wasn\u2019t legally allowed to stand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s going on with TikTok?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Thursday March 7, the House Energy and Commerce Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/us-lawmakers-move-against-bytedance-in-push-to-divest-tiktok\/\">unanimously voted<\/a> to advance legislation which would force ByteDance, TikTok\u2019s parent company, to divest ownership of the app. The legislation stipulates that it should be done within 165 days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason for this is because ByteDance is a Chinese company, which has led to fear among Americans over their user data security. This fear was so palpable that federal staff and state employees in 34 states are prohibited from having the social media app on Government\/state devices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TikTokPolicy\/status\/1765095354633015412\">statement<\/a> responding to the bill on Tuesday March 5, a TikTok spokesperson said: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This bill is an outright ban of TikTok, no matter how much the authors try to disguise it.
