The love for Scream<\/em> reached new heights after the release of Scream 6<\/em><\/a>, but the future of the franchise is up in the air. In its opening weekend, Scream 6<\/em> broke the franchise record by making $67 million at the box office. Scream 6<\/em> was the second film featuring a new generation of stars, including Jenna Ortega<\/strong><\/a>, Melissa Barrera<\/strong>, Mason Gooding<\/strong>, and Jasmin Savoy Brown<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In November 2023, Melissa was removed from the cast<\/a> of Scream 7<\/em>. The actress was fired from the film over her comments regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict. One day later, it was reported that Jenna would not be returning for Scream 7<\/em><\/a> because of her Wednesday<\/em> season 2 shooting schedule. Now, new details have been revealed about the Scream 7<\/em> drama. Mason explained to Variety<\/em><\/a> in March 2024 why the seventh installment could still happen.<\/p>\n \u201cIf it could make money, I guarantee you, they\u2019ll make it,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201cIt\u2019s one of those things where you wait to hear from the people that make the big decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n So what does this mean for Scream 7<\/em>? Hollywood Life<\/strong> is breaking down everything we know about Scream 7<\/em>.<\/p>\n Scream 7<\/em> was confirmed in August 2023 when Christopher Landon<\/strong> was announced as the new director. He\u2019s taking over from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Tyler Gillett<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The fifth Scream<\/em> movie was released in January 2022. After it became a box office success, Scream 6<\/em> quickly got the green light. The sixth Scream<\/em> movie<\/a> filmed quickly took place from June to August 2022. Scream 7<\/em> was delayed due to the writers\u2019 and actors\u2019 strikes of 2023.<\/p>\n There\u2019s no release date yet for a seventh Scream<\/em> movie. Given the ongoing casting changes, it\u2019s unclear when Scream 7\u2019s<\/em> production will get underway.<\/p>\n Following Scream 6\u2019s success, everyone assumed Scream 7<\/em> would feature the return of Scream\u2019s<\/em> \u201cCore Four,\u201d which includes Jenna Ortega<\/strong> as Tara, Melissa Barrera<\/strong> as Sam, Mason Gooding<\/strong> as Chad, and Jasmin Savoy Brown<\/strong> as Mindy. They all managed to survive their latest round with Ghostface.<\/p>\n However, the Core Four is now the Core Two in the wake of Melissa\u2019s firing and Jenna\u2019s departure. Jenna\u2019s exit is due to her Wednesday<\/em> season 2 filming schedule. The Golden Globe nominee is expected to film the second season of the Netflix hit from April 2024 through the summer. Jenna reportedly asked for a \u201cbigger payday\u201d in order to return for Scream 7<\/em> and had no deal in place after Scream 6<\/em>, according to THR<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n Melissa was fired a month before the news broke, according to THR<\/em>. Prior to her firing, her deal to return for Scream 7<\/em> had reportedly been finalized.\u00a0\u201cSpyglass\u2019 stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech,\u201d Spyglass, the production company behind Scream<\/em>, said in a statement regarding Melissa\u2019s removal.<\/p>\n There\u2019s been no word about Jasmin and Mason\u2019s roles in Scream 7<\/em> amid these changes. Spyglass boss Gary Barber<\/strong> supposedly doesn\u2019t believe that \u201cstars nor large salaries are essential\u201d for the success of the Scream<\/em> franchise. \u201cHe didn\u2019t need Neve, he doesn\u2019t need Jenna,\u201d an insider told THR<\/em>. Scream 7<\/em> was reportedly going to be the \u201cend of a rumored trilogy focused on the two Carpenter sisters.\u201d While some insiders believe the future of the franchise is in \u201cshambles\u201d and \u201cvery raw,\u201d a full-scale reboot could be on the horizon.<\/p>\n Hayden Panettiere\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> long-awaited return as Kirby Reed paved the way for more of the beloved character in the future. She was stabbed again by Ghostface, but she survived. She told Tara and Sam to call her if they \u201cever\u201d needed anything.<\/p>\n Kirby was the perfect bridge between the original legacy characters and the newbies. She also formed a sweet bond with Tara. Bring Kirby back, Scream 7<\/em>!<\/p>\n Courteney Cox\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> Gale Weathers also survived another brutal attack by Ghostface. Courteney is the only original Scream<\/em> character to have appeared in all 6 films so far. She would likely make an appearance in a seventh installment.<\/p>\n As with all previous Scream<\/em> films, a new batch of supporting characters would be introduced in Scream 7<\/em>. One or a few of them could be the new Ghostface<\/a>!<\/p>\n The Scream<\/em> world was shocked in June 2022 when Neve Campbell<\/strong> revealed that she would not be returning<\/a> as Sidney Prescott in Scream 6<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cSadly, I won\u2019t be making the next Scream<\/em> film,\u201d Neve said in a statement. \u201cAs a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream<\/em>. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.\u201d<\/p>\n Neve\u2019s absence was felt in Scream 6<\/em>. She was mentioned briefly after the latest set of Ghostface attacks. Gale revealed that Sidney wouldn\u2019t be coming to New York. Sidney and Mark took their kids to a safe spot to hide out from Ghostface.<\/p>\n Sidney Prescott will always remain a core part of the Scream<\/em> world, but Neve\u2019s decision to not come back didn\u2019t completely change the story of Scream 6<\/em>. \u201cThis was always the story we wanted to tell, which is really exciting we were able to do it,\u201d writer James Vanderbilt<\/strong> told Variety<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThe Sam and Tara sister story was always the thing we wanted to be front and center in this. We love Neve and think she\u2019s amazing and had a great experience with her on [Scream] 5<\/em>. She needs to do what she needs to do as a business woman and we totally support that.\u201d<\/p>\n Director Tyler Gillett<\/strong> added, \u201cI think what ultimately happened was we knew that if anything, in the absence of that character, we had to really dig deeper into the core four and make those relationships matter in a really emotional way. The goal was to try to form a connection between those characters and the audience the way that we formed a connection with Gale, Dewey, and Sid. At the end of the day, that\u2019s just about having the time and the real estate in your story to really dig deep. But no, it wasn\u2019t a wildly dramatic pivot.\u201d<\/p>\n Neve hasn\u2019t ruled out bringing Sidney back into the fold. \u201cI don\u2019t know that I\u2019m done for good,\u201d the actress tells PEOPLE<\/em><\/a> in August 2022. \u201cIt would really depend on what they came to me with next. It would have to be different. It would have to be a different attitude, and I\u2019m not sure that\u2019s going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n The actress continued, \u201cIf they came to me with a number that felt right, that felt respectful, that felt in keeping with my value that I brought to the franchise, I\u2019d be willing to consider [returning in the future].\u201dI don\u2019t believe it\u2019s dead in the water, but we\u2019ll see. But honestly, I\u2019m really okay. I\u2019ve been able to let it go. I wish them well. I\u2019m doing three different shows right now. I\u2019m very, very grateful that I\u2019m working. I\u2019m happy. So all is good.\u201d<\/p>\n That\u2019s the million-dollar question. OG killer Stu was seemingly killed in the first Scream<\/em> movie after being stabbed and electrocuted when a television falls on his head. However, a legion of Scream<\/em> fans are holding out hope that Stu somehow survived and has been living in hiding for all this time.<\/p>\n Scream 5<\/em> featured Stu\u2019s nephew briefly, but he was killed quickly by Ghostface. The big showdown went down at Stu Macher\u2019s old house just like in the original.<\/p>\n Scream 6<\/em> directly referenced Stu Macher. At the Ghostface shrine warehouse, the Core Four and others came face-to-face with key items from past killings, including the TV that supposedly killed Stu. When Kirby brings up the TV that killed Stu, Mindy quipped, \u201cIf you believe he\u2019s dead.\u201d<\/p>\n Scream\u2019s<\/em> original screenwriter, Kevin Williamson<\/strong>, has said that Stu is dead<\/em> dead. \u201cNo, he\u2019s dead. I think that started because of the college scene, the frat party scene because he\u2019s standing in the background. He just came to visit set that night,\u201d he told Collider<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n The latest Scream<\/em> team isn\u2019t so concrete about Stu\u2019s fate. \u201cThere\u2019s no good answer, so I will never confirm or deny stuff like that,\u201d James Vanderbilt<\/strong> told Variety<\/em><\/a>. Producer William Sherak<\/strong> added, \u201cAnything\u2019s possible.\u201d Producer Paul Neinstein<\/strong> also said, \u201cCharacters can come in and out! There\u2019s different ways to do it. It\u2019s such a part of all of their lives; they have an affinity for Scream.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n Even if Stu is dead, he could come back as Skeet Ulrich\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> Billy Loomis, who has appeared in the latest two films in Sam\u2019s head. If Stu somehow is still alive, that would be the ultimate twist.
