On Saturday, June 3, about 50
\nchildren and their families enjoyed a day of fishing and fun at the Bankhead
\nAnnual Youth Fishing Derby.\u00a0 The event,
\nnow in its 28th<\/sup> year, is much anticipated in the local communities surrounding
\nBankhead National Forest.\u00a0 The Forest
\nService pond was stocked with about 500 pounds of catfish for the derby.\u00a0 Additional fun activities included archery,
\nair soft shooting, casting contests, and interactive educational booths focused
\non natural resources conservation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the
\nBankhead District Ranger Andy Scott, partnerships and community support in
\nlocal events is important to the success of fishing derbies around the
\nstate.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cGetting young people interested
\nin outdoor activities, like fishing and hunting, is critical to conservation.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>The event was held in celebration of National
\nFishing and Boating Week, National Trails Day and National Get Outdoors Day.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Most every child caught a fish or two, and
\nevery child received a t-shirt, water bottle, goodie bag, and door prize thanks
\nto generous donations.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Three children
\nwon lifetime freshwater fishing licenses thanks to the Alabama Conservation Enforcement
\nOfficers Association.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sponsors and
\npartners make the event possible.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>This
\nyear\u2019s hosts, sponsors and partners included the US Forest Service, the Alabama
\nWildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division, the National Wild Turkey
\nFederation, the Alabama Conservation Enforcement Officer\u2019s Association, the Winston
\nCounty Commission, the Winston County Natural Resources Council, Double Springs
\nLions Club, Lawrence County Rescue Squad, Alabama Forestry Commission, Alabama
\nCooperative Extension System and 4H, Wild Alabama and the Department of Energy.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Winners
\nof this year\u2019s casting contest were; Bridger Moore of Haleyville, Kolter Couch
\nof Double Springs and Brooks Kachleman of Florence.\u00a0 Trophies and prizes for biggest fish were
\nawarded.\u00a0 The biggest fish overall,
\nmeasuring at 21 \u00bc\u201d, was caught by Sophia Garcia of Double Springs.\u00a0 Winners in the 5-6 year old group included 2nd<\/sup>
\nplace Rylee Young of Town Creek and 1st<\/sup> place Weston Johnston of
\nJasper.\u00a0 In the 7-9 year old group, Brantley
\nMoody took 2nd<\/sup> place and Ella Moody took first place, both of Double
\nSprings.\u00a0 In the 10-12 year old group, Fisher
\nSteele of Danville won 2nd<\/sup> place and Austin Flannagin of Double
\nSprings took 1st<\/sup> place.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
