{"id":211303,"date":"2024-03-08T13:17:19","date_gmt":"2024-03-08T13:17:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/08\/bankhead-youth-fishing-derby-gets-kids-hooked-on-fishing\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:21:00","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:21:00","slug":"bankhead-youth-fishing-derby-gets-kids-hooked-on-fishing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/08\/bankhead-youth-fishing-derby-gets-kids-hooked-on-fishing\/","title":{"rendered":"Bankhead Youth Fishing Derby Gets Kids Hooked on Fishing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>On Saturday, June 3, about 50<br \/>\nchildren and their families enjoyed a day of fishing and fun at the Bankhead<br \/>\nAnnual Youth Fishing Derby.\u00a0 The event,<br \/>\nnow in its 28<sup>th<\/sup> year, is much anticipated in the local communities surrounding<br \/>\nBankhead National Forest.\u00a0 The Forest<br \/>\nService pond was stocked with about 500 pounds of catfish for the derby.\u00a0 Additional fun activities included archery,<br \/>\nair soft shooting, casting contests, and interactive educational booths focused<br \/>\non natural resources conservation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\">According to the<br \/>\nBankhead District Ranger Andy Scott, partnerships and community support in<br \/>\nlocal events is important to the success of fishing derbies around the<br \/>\nstate.<\/span><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\">\u201cGetting young people interested<br \/>\nin outdoor activities, like fishing and hunting, is critical to conservation.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\">The event was held in celebration of National<br \/>\nFishing and Boating Week, National Trails Day and National Get Outdoors Day.<\/span><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\">Most every child caught a fish or two, and<br \/>\nevery child received a t-shirt, water bottle, goodie bag, and door prize thanks<br \/>\nto generous donations.<\/span><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\">Three children<br \/>\nwon lifetime freshwater fishing licenses thanks to the Alabama Conservation Enforcement<br \/>\nOfficers Association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\">Sponsors and<br \/>\npartners make the event possible.<\/span><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\">This<br \/>\nyear\u2019s hosts, sponsors and partners included the US Forest Service, the Alabama<br \/>\nWildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division, the National Wild Turkey<br \/>\nFederation, the Alabama Conservation Enforcement Officer\u2019s Association, the Winston<br \/>\nCounty Commission, the Winston County Natural Resources Council, Double Springs<br \/>\nLions Club, Lawrence County Rescue Squad, Alabama Forestry Commission, Alabama<br \/>\nCooperative Extension System and 4H, Wild Alabama and the Department of Energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;
