It\u2019s Barbie\u2019s world<\/a>, and we\u2019re just living in it. Last year has been all about Barbie<\/em><\/a>, and the highly-anticipated film is already one of the biggest blockbusters ever. Margot Robbie<\/strong><\/a> and Ryan Gosling<\/strong><\/a> lead Greta Gerwig\u2019s<\/strong> live-action flick about the beloved doll and all her friends has already amassed over $400 million in less than a week. The movie has a razor-sharp script and is deeply feminist. Barbie<\/em> also brings the laughs (and some tears) in one of the best films of the year.<\/p>\n

So, what does this mean for Barbie 2<\/em>? Is a sequel happening? Greta is addressing her thoughts on a Barbie<\/em> sequel after the film\u2019s mega success.<\/p>\n

Will There Be A Barbie 2<\/em>?<\/h2>\n

As of right now, Barbie 2<\/em> has not gotten the green light. Warner Bros. hasn\u2019t announced anything official ahead of Barbie\u2019s<\/em> release on July 21. Depending on the box office results, Barbie 2<\/em> could be in the works sooner than we think. Barbie<\/em> made a whopping $22.3 million just in previews, so the probability of a sequel is better than ever.<\/p>\n

Director Greta Gerwig<\/strong> addressed whether or not she would seek out making a sequel while being honored as one of TIME<\/em>\u2018s Women of the Year. \u201cIf I find the undertow, then we get it. If I don\u2019t find an undertow, there\u2019s no more,\u201d Greta said, per Variety<\/em><\/a>. The actress and filmmaker then explained her mindset on the possibility.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy North Star is \u2018What do I deeply love? What do I really care about? Like, \u2018What\u2019s the story underneath this story?\u2019\u201d she explained. \u201cAnd I think with Barbie<\/em>, the story underneath this story was I loved Barbie. I remember going to Toys R Us and looking at Barbies and I loved their hair. And I loved everything about them and my mom was not sure about it. And I find that\u2019s the story, that\u2019s the generational story\u2026I\u2019m always trying to find those undertows.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked about the film\u2019s ending and the possibility of a Barbie<\/em> sequel, Greta said \u201canything\u2019s possible\u201d on the Inside Total Film<\/em> podcast<\/a>. \u201cI would say today, the main thing I\u2019m focused on is the next 15 days and then I\u2019ll see what happens after that\u2026 I will say I loved making it so much. It was such a joyful experience. It was so wonderful. It really allowed us to go in all these different directions and I don\u2019t think any other movie would have afforded those opportunities. I mean it was almost like I got to live out my dream of making a 1950s sound-stage musical, which I can\u2019t imagine anything else would have been.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz<\/strong> is hopeful about more Barbie movies. \u201cWe\u2019re looking to create movies that become cultural events,\u201d he told TIME<\/em><\/a>. \u201cIf you can excite filmmakers like Greta and Noah [Baumbach]<\/strong> to embrace the opportunity and have creative freedom, you can have a real impact.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following Barbie\u2019s<\/em> gigantic $155 million opening weekend, Greta was asked again about Barbie 2<\/em>. \u201cAt this moment, it\u2019s all I\u2019ve got,\u201d she told The New York<\/em> <\/a>Times.<\/em> \u201cI feel like that at the end of every movie, like I\u2019ll never have another idea and everything I\u2019ve ever wanted to do, I did. I wouldn\u2019t want to squash anybody else\u2019s dream but for me, at this moment, I\u2019m at totally zero.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Mattel has big plans for Barbie. \u201cBarbie, as a brand, has many different iterations. The product lines of Barbie is a very broad brand. In addition to the main Barbie figure, she has family, she has a lot of elements around in her universe,\u201d Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz<\/strong> told Variety<\/em><\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a very rich universe\u2026 It\u2019s a very broad and very elastic brand, in terms of opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ynon previously told TIME<\/em><\/a>, \u201cWe\u2019re looking to create movies that become cultural events. If you can excite filmmakers like Greta and Noah [Baumbach]<\/strong> to embrace the opportunity and have creative freedom, you can have a real impact.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barbie 2<\/em> Cast<\/h2>\n

A Barbie 2<\/em> wouldn\u2019t feel right without Margot Robbie<\/strong><\/a>, but a sequel could revolve around any of the Barbies.<\/a> Given what happens to her character by the end of the movie, it would be very interesting how she\u2019d be incorporated into the story. Maybe Barbie would have to go back to Barbie Land for some reason, or more Barbies could come to the real world. There are countless possibilities!<\/p>\n

Margot hasn\u2019t ruled out Barbie 2, but she\u2019s only thinking about the present right now. \u201cIt could go a million different directions from this point,\u201d she told TIME<\/em><\/a>. \u201cBut I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Barbenheimer mania has officially taken over the summer. Cillian Murphy<\/strong><\/a>, the star of Oppenheimer<\/em><\/a>, was asked about playing a Ken in a potential Barbie 2<\/em> \u2014 and he didn\u2019t say no. \u201cSure, yeah. Let\u2019s read the script, let\u2019s have a conversation,\u201d the actor told Omelete<\/em><\/a>. \u201cI can\u2019t wait to see [Barbie<\/em>]. I can\u2019t wait to see the movie. I think it\u2019s great for cinema to get all these great movies happening this summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

How Did Barbie<\/em> End?<\/h2>\n

Stereotypical Barbie makes a life-changing decision in the final act of the movie<\/a>. She decides to take control of her own destiny and ending. She leaves Barbie Land behind to become human and discover her true identity. The film\u2019s final moments show Barbie getting dropped off for her first appointment at the gynecologist\u2019s office. She goes by the name Barbara, which is inspired by Barbie inventor Ruth Handler\u2019s daughter.<\/p>\n

Barbie\u2019s journey came to this conclusion after she suffered an existential crisis, causing a rip in the space-time continuum between Barbie Land and the real world. Barbie had to go to the real world and find the person playing with her in order to save herself. When Barbie and Ken entered the real world, they realized it was the total opposite of Barbie Land. They were introduced to misogyny and the patriarchy.<\/p>\n

Barbie crossed paths with Gloria, the woman who\u2019d been playing with her and having the same thoughts of an identity crisis. While on the run from Mattel, Barbie brought Gloria and her daughter, Sasha, to Barbie Land. Ken had gotten a headstart and brought the patriarchy back with him, upending all the progress the Barbies had achieved.<\/p>\n

With an incredible monologue, Gloria inspired Barbie to take back Barbie Land. Barbie, Gloria, Sasha, Weird Barbie, Allan, and more worked together to undo the brainwashing done to the other Barbies by the Kens. They turned the Kens against each other while they reclaimed control of Barbie Land.<\/p>\n

Once Barbie Land was saved, Barbie and Ken had an honest conversation. Ken felt that he had no identity without Barbie, and she encouraged him to find his own purpose without her. After everything that happened, Barbie still felt uncertain about her own purpose in life. That\u2019s when she met with Barbie inventor Ruth Handler. Ruth\u2019s words helped Barbie make the decision to become human.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
