{"id":210715,"date":"2024-03-06T21:09:11","date_gmt":"2024-03-06T21:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/06\/openai-hit-back-at-elon-musk-lawsuit-with-leaked-emails\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:21:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:21:09","slug":"openai-hit-back-at-elon-musk-lawsuit-with-leaked-emails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/06\/openai-hit-back-at-elon-musk-lawsuit-with-leaked-emails\/","title":{"rendered":"OpenAI hit back at Elon Musk lawsuit with leaked emails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After a lawsuit was announced last Friday (March. 1) from Elon Musk, the people behind OpenAI have shared what they claim to be historical email correspondence between them and the Tesla chief executive as they say they\u2019re aiming to \u2018dismiss all of Elon\u2019s claims.\u2019<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/elon-musk-sues-openai-and-ceo-sam-altman-over-breach-of-contract\/\">Elon Musk is suing OpenAI,<\/a> its CEO Sam Altman, co-founder Greg Brockman, as well as others, as he accuses them of violating contractual commitments established during the company\u2019s inception when he helped to found the company in 2015.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The lawsuit contends the Microsoft-backed AI company\u2019s shift towards profit-oriented objectives goes against the original agreement.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Today (Mar.6) <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/tag\/openai\/\">OpenAI<\/a> took to X to share their latest <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/blog\/openai-elon-musk\">blog post<\/a> highlighting information about their side of the story and their opinion on the suit.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In the release, they expand on three specific points. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><em>We realized building AGI will require far more resources than we\u2019d initially imagined<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><em>We and Elon recognized a for-profit entity would be necessary to acquire those resources<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><em>We advance our mission by building widely-available beneficial tools<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The authors behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/blog\/openai-elon-musk\">blog,<\/a> which includes CEO Sam Altman, go on to say: \u201cWe\u2019re sad that it\u2019s come to this with someone whom we\u2019ve deeply admired \u2013 someone who inspired us to aim higher, then told us we would fail, started a competitor, and then sued us when we started making meaningful progress towards OpenAI\u2019s mission without him.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe are focused on advancing our mission and have a long way to go. As we continue to make our tools better and better, we are excited to deploy these systems so they empower every individual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In response, Elon Musk replied via X simply telling OpenAI to \u201cchange your name\u201d. He also responded with a laughing face emoji to a post from user @realSharonZhou who said \u2018more accurate to rename OpenAI to OpenEmail.\u2019<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Change your name<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1765262842498847174?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 6, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">The emails between OpenAI and Elon Musk<\/h2>\n<p>The email chain shared from OpenAI dates back to 2015, when the company was first founded. Elon Musk helped to cofound OpenAI, but later stepped away in 2018. OpenAI has published emails from the South African-born billionaire in an attempt to knock down his claims the company has strayed from its founding mission to serve as a non-profit check on the threats of generative AI.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In the first email which is said to be from the billionaire entrepreneur, it says \u2018We need to go with a much bigger number than $100M to avoid sounding hopeless\u2026\u2019 The content in the email goes on to explain a \u2018$1bn funding commitment\u2019 may be more appropriate.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When looking at the next step for OpenAI, the details in the blog say \u2018Elon wanted majority equity, initial board control, and to be CEO. In the middle of these discussions, he withheld funding.\u2019<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The blog post continues to read: \u2018We couldn\u2019t agree to terms on a for-profit with Elon because we felt it was against the mission\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In an email shared by OpenAI, apparently from Elon Musk, he says OpenAI should \u2018attach to Tesla as its cash cow.\u2019<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In one of the last emails to be made public, cofounder Ilya Sutskever explains further about the tool.
