Though the company has taken steps over the years to make it easier for people <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/instagram-hacked-account-recovery-tool-verified-badge-164913830.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:to recover;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a> lost accounts, Meta largely relies on automated systems and there are still many people who fall through cracks.<\/p>\n<p>As the letter highlights, this can be especially devastating for people who lose access to business accounts and pages. Even <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/how-a-social-engineering-hack-turned-these-facebook-pages-into-a-dumping-ground-for-spam-143010079.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:high-profile creators;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a> can find themselves unable to get support from a human employee of the company unless they have a personal connection to someone who works at Meta. Other users sometimes resort to <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/do-not-pay-unban-social-media-194515590.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:legal services;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a> or hiring their own <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/instagram-account-recovery-process-broken\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:hackers;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a> to get their accounts back.<\/p>\n<p>While it may seem surprising that state law enforcement officials would get involved in this issue, Reddit and other online forums for hacking victims often advise people to lodge complaints with their local AG\u2019s office as a last resort. Some users have <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/facebookdisabledme\/comments\/wux6y7\/facebook_account_restored_attorney_general_update\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reported;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a> regaining <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:8;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/facebookdisabledme\/comments\/10wmt7p\/california_attorney_generals_office_seems_to_have\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:access;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:8;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a> to their accounts after a state attorney general\u2019s office intervened on their behalf.<\/p>\n<p>Now, AGs are apparently flooded with such requests. \u201cOur offices have experienced a dramatic and persistent spike in complaints in recent years concerning account takeovers that is not only alarming for our constituents but also a substantial drain on our office resources,\u201d the letter states.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to putting more resources into customer service, the letter asks Meta to provide more details on \u201cthe number of account takeovers over the past five years; suspected causes of the increase in account takeovers; safeguards currently in place to prevent account takeovers; current policies and procedures related to Meta\u2019s response to account takeovers; and staffing related to safeguarding the platforms against account takeovers as well as responding to complaints.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, a Meta spokesperson said that \u201cscammers use every platform available to them and constantly adapt to evade enforcement\u201d from the company. \u201cWe invest heavily in our trained enforcement and review teams and have specialized detection tools to identify compromised accounts and other fraudulent activity. We regularly share tips and tools people can use to protect themselves, provide a means to report potential violations, work with law enforcement and take legal action.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, <em>Bloomberg <\/em><a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:9;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/meta-building-actual-customer-service-171523755.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:reported;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:9;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a> that Meta was in the \u201cearly stages\u201d creating a customer service division that would be able to help users with account issues. It&#8217;s unclear what became of the plan. Later that year, the company laid off thousands of employees.
