Vanessa Hudgens<\/a> <\/strong>tied the knot with her partner of three years Cole Tucker<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>in December 2, 2023. Prior to linking up with the ballplayer though, Vanessa was in a relationship with actor Austin Butler<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>for about nine years. The pair ultimately called it quits<\/a> in 2020, shortly before Austin\u2019s breakout role in Elvis.\u00a0<\/em>Fans were shocked that the long-time couple had suddenly called it quits, but they\u2019ve both briefly discussed what happened between them in several interviews.<\/p>\n

When Did Vanessa & Austin Start Dating?<\/h2>\n

Vanessa and Austin began dating in 2011, but the pair were pretty quiet about their romance<\/a> until going public in 2014. The\u00a0High School Musical\u00a0<\/em>actress called Austin the \u201clove of her life<\/a>\u201d in a 2014 Instagram post. While the pair eventually split up, it\u2019s clear that they had big influences on one another.<\/p>\n

While Austin was promoting\u00a0Elvis\u00a0<\/em>in 2022, he seemingly credited his ex<\/a> with helping him go after the part. In 2019, Vanessa told a story about hearing her then-boyfriend sing an Elvis Presley\u00a0<\/strong>song around Christmas during an interview on\u00a0Live With Kelly & Ryan.\u00a0<\/em>Austin appeared to reference the same story during The Hollywood Reporter\u2019s<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>actors\u2019 roundtable. \u201cI was going to look at Christmas lights with a friend, and there was an Elvis Christmas song on the radio and I was singing along, and my friend looked over at me and goes, \u2018You\u2019ve got to play Elvis.\u2019 I said, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s such a long shot,’\u201d he said. \u201cThat same friend<\/a> was there and I was playing the piano. She said, \u2018I\u2019m serious. You gotta figure out how you can get the rights to a script.\u2019 Then my agent called and said, \u2018So Baz Luhrmann<\/strong> is making an\u00a0Elvis<\/em>\u00a0film<\/a>.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite being together for nine years, the pair ultimately split up in 2020.<\/p>\n

Why Did They Break Up?<\/h2>\n

After the pair broke up in 2020, an insider told\u00a0Hollywood Life\u00a0<\/strong>exclusively that their split was because of their busy schedules<\/a> and being far apart. \u201cThey had to spend too much time apart the last few months, that\u2019s what did it.\u00a0Vanessa<\/span>\u00a0was so busy with back to back projects that she was hardly home. And\u00a0Austin<\/span> has been just as busy with work. He\u2019s doing a movie in Australia [Elvis<\/em>] and he\u2019s had to be over there on and off for months doing pre-production. They are very good when they are together. But when they\u2019re apart, that is when things get tough and they were apart for months,\u201d the source said. \u201cIt\u2019s really sad because they truly love each other. But it\u2019s one of the hard realities of this business, it is very hard on relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another insider told\u00a0HL\u00a0<\/strong>that the couple simply \u201cdrifted apart,\u201d and that they hadn\u2019t had some big fight. \u201cIt is sad, but is something that had to be done. They are both being very mature about it, and are accepting the change and being apart gracefully,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

Austin briefly touched on his split<\/a> from Vanessa in a 2022\u00a0GQ<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>profile. \u201cLife is full of changes, and you\u2019ve got to find a way to constantly be evolving and growing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

During a March 2024 interview on the \u201cShe Pivots<\/a>\u201d podcast, Vanessa credited her and Austin\u2019s breakup with leading her to marry Cole.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like my last breakup has really catapulted me to a very, very special place, obviously, getting married,\u201d she pointed out, before adding that the split pushed her toward \u201cthe right person, which I\u2019m so grateful for. Because [Cole is] just the most supportive, real understanding human being that I\u2019ve ever met.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Has Happened Since Their Split?<\/h2>\n

Since their 2020 breakup, both Vanessa and Austin have moved on to new relationships. As mentioned above, the\u00a0Spring Breakers\u00a0<\/em>actress began dating baseball player Cole Tucker in 2020. The pair got engaged in 2022, and they exchanged vows<\/a> in an intimate ceremony in Tulum, Mexico in December 2023.<\/p>\n

After his split from Vanessa, Austin was romantically linked to a few ladies, but since December 2021, he\u2019s been in a relationship<\/a> with model\u00a0Kaia Gerber<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>He\u2019s even been spotted on double dates<\/a> with her and her parents,\u00a0Cindy Crawford\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Rande Gerber.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

About three years after their split, Vanessa and Austin did cross paths<\/a> at the\u00a0Vanity Fair\u00a0<\/em>Oscar Party in March 2023. While it\u2019s not clear if the two chatted or said anything to one another, they were both seen in the same frame of a photo taken as they were leaving the party.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
