Too much focus in education has been on graduating college\u2026 it should be on jobs. I think the schools should be measured on did the kids get out and get a good job?\u201d Dimon told Indianapolis-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WAHfdX4rsMw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">WISH-TV<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>In the past few years approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ted\/2022\/61-8-percent-of-recent-high-school-graduates-enrolled-in-college-in-october-2021.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">60% of high school graduates<\/a> have gone on to enroll in college\u2014though that number dropped and then rose again since the COVID pandemic. And while landing a better paid job after graduation is often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankrate.com\/loans\/student-loans\/reasons-to-go-to-college\/#reasons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">cited as one of the motivators<\/a> for attending college or university, anecdotal and data evidence suggest this may no longer be the case. <\/p>\n<p>Gen Z, for example, is increasingly realizing the world of work isn\u2019t what they thought it was. Graduate Lohanny Santos recently went viral on TikTok for <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/02\/25\/lohanny-santos-tiktok-resume-gen-z-job-video-hollywood-ambition\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">recounting her struggle<\/a> to find a minimum wage role with two degrees, while employers are increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/11\/03\/gen-z-resume-work-skills-based-hiring-recruitment-research\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">turning to skills-based hiring<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/careeroutlook\/2023\/data-on-display\/education-pays.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Bureau of Labor Statistics data<\/a> shows earnings tend to be higher once you\u2019ve achieved a bachelor\u2019s degree, prospective students now also have to consider the cost of repaying crippling tuition loans. <\/p>\n<p>Dimon pointed out that a 17-year-old bank teller could make $40,000 a year, adding: \u201cAnd if you happen to have a family at 18 or whatever, you get $20,000 in medical benefit for your family. You can be a welder, you can be a coder, you could be cyber you could be automotive\u2014all of those jobs are $40,000 to $60,000\/$70,000 a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJobs, jobs, jobs,\u201d Dimon repeated. \u201cThere are a lot of efforts taking place around the country but I think we\u2019ve fallen behind as a nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Education shakeup advocate<\/h2>\n<p>Dimon has long been an advocate of shaking up the education system to introduce a greater focus on skills, previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/jpmorgan-chase-ceo-discusses-needed-change-us-higher-education-hayes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">lauding Germany\u2019s apprenticeship<\/a> scheme, for example. <\/p>\n<p>And while the number of apprenticeship opportunities in America is growing\u2014and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/careeroutlook\/2022\/article\/apprentice-beyond-construction.htm#:~:text=The%20U.S.%20Department%20of%20Labor%27s,registered%20apprenticeship%20programs%20in%202022.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">predicted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a> to continue to do so\u2014the 600,000 individuals currently on such schemes are a drop in the ocean compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/educationdata.org\/number-of-college-graduates#:~:text=1%2C036%2C430%20college%20graduates%20earned%20associate%27s,all%20graduates%20earned%20master%27s%20degrees.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">millions of college undergraduates.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The price tag associated with high-calibre degrees is also going up\u2014prompting some to wonder whether Ivy League qualifications are <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/03\/30\/ivy-league-schools-closing-in-90000-year-price-tag-tuition-experts-insist-worth-it\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">still worth the $90,000-a-year fees<\/a>. While many experts told <em>Fortune<\/em> the value of such a degree warrants the eye-watering sum, individuals <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/09\/05\/top-paying-majors-men-women-stem-subjects-engineering-salaries-bankrate-degree-college-gender-pay-gap\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">should be picky<\/a> about which subjects they study if they want to go on to earn six-figure salaries. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dimon\u2019s future of work<\/h2>\n<p>The banking boss, who was paid <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/01\/19\/jamie-dimon-jpmorgan-2023-pay-record-salary\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">a record $36 million<\/a> for his work at America\u2019s biggest bank in 2023, believes not only that the route to a career will change, but also that the nature of work will shift. <\/p>\n<p>A cautious advocate of the benefits of AI, Dimon said last year he believes the technology will allow staff of the future to work <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/10\/03\/jamie-dimon-jpmorgan-chase-ceo-ai-impact-working-week\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">3.5 days a week instead of the traditional five. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople have to take a deep breath,\u201d Dimon told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-10-02\/dimon-sees-ai-giving-a-3-1-2-day-workweek-to-the-next-generation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Bloomberg TV<\/a>. \u201cTechnology has always replaced jobs.
