They planted white oak seedlings for<br \/>\nthe first time in Alabama&#8217;s national forests. The collaboration promotes<br \/>\n&#8220;the desired future condition&#8221; of oak in the forest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-thickness: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;\"><span face=\"&quot;Helvetica&quot;,sans-serif\" style=\"color: #1b1b1b; font-size: 12pt;\">According to Bankhead National Forest District Ranger Andy<br \/>\nScott, the project involves planting between 500 and 800 white oak seedlings.<br \/>\n&#8220;The area was planted in loblolly pine, which we determined was at risk of<br \/>\nSouthern Pine Beetle infestation, so the district developed a project in which<br \/>\nwe would remove the pine, but before harvesting it, recognized that we did not<br \/>\nhave enough advanced regeneration in oaks and hickories,&#8221; said Scott.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-thickness: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;\"><span face=\"&quot;Helvetica&quot;,sans-serif\" style=\"color: #1b1b1b; font-size: 12pt;\">To remedy the lack of hardwoods in the area, the district team<br \/>\nreached out to others. &#8220;The goal was to ensure we had the necessary<br \/>\nwell-informed science, groups, and partnerships to make the project whole, said<br \/>\nJason Harris, silviculturist for the Bankhead National Forest. \u201cI<br \/>\ncontacted\u00a0Callie Schweitzer and Stacy Clark at the USDA Forest Service<br \/>\nSouthern Research Station and local communities through Wild Alabama. One of the ways we think we can get it back is through<br \/>\nplanting,&#8221; said Dr. Clark, research forester at the Forest Service<br \/>\nSouthern Research Station in Knoxville, TN. &#8220;White oak is a species that&#8217;s<br \/>\nextremely important for several reasons. It provides staves for barrels and<br \/>\ncooperages that help the distillery industry. It is also a great source for<br \/>\nwildlife.
