Both Japan\u2019s SLIM spacecraft and Intuitive Machines\u2019 Odysseus have gone to sleep for the two-week-long stretch of darkness, the two teams confirmed at the end of this week. There\u2019s no guarantee that they\u2019ll be able to resume operations afterward, but they\u2019ll try to reestablish contact when the time comes.<\/p>\n<p>While the solar powered landers weren\u2019t built to withstand the frigid lunar night, SLIM \u2014 which has been on the moon since January 19 \u2014 has already beaten the odds before <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:1;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/japans-moon-lander-took-this-eerie-photo-before-being-enveloped-by-lunar-night-221438290.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:to pull through last month;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:1;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">to pull through last month<\/a>. It\u2019ll be the first lunar night for Odysseus, which landed on February 22.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet-wrapper\" data-embed-anchor=\"06a86937-5510-53b5-80ff-2f8c244cee9d\">\n<blockquote placeholder=\"\" data-theme=\"light\" class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p>On March 1 at 3am JST, the sun set on the Shioli Crater and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SLIM?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:#SLIM;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">#SLIM<\/a> re-entered a period of dormancy. Odysseus has sent home some pictures too from its wide-angle camera, including one last transmission before lunar night that shows a portion of the lander and the surface of the moon, with a tiny crescent Earth in the distance. But the world has eagerly been awaiting third-person POV pictures from the EagleCam made by students at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, which hitched a ride with Odysseus.
