But they will end up owning pieces of two companies instead of one.<\/p>\n<p>The stock rallied 1.3% in midday trading Friday to put it on track for its highest close since July 20, 2017. That follows an 18.5% jump in February, the biggest monthly gain since it ran up 23.1% in January 2023, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/ges-stock-has-its-best-year-on-record-ahead-of-final-breakup-13f579bc?mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">record yearly gain<\/a> of 95.2% in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison, the S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        <a data-track-hover=\"QuotePeek\" class=\"qt-chip positive\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/index\/SPX?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SPX<\/a><br \/>\n       gained 5.2% in February and advanced 24.2% in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>On April 2, the 150-year old company, which was co-founded by Thomas Edison, will stop being GE and become GE Aerospace. The company, which will still have its stock traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol GE, will provide engines, components and systems for use in commercial and military aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the company will be spun off as a fully independent GE Vernova, which will include the current company\u2019s power, wind and electrification businesses. GE Vernova\u2019s stock will be traded on the NYSE under the ticker symbol GEV.<\/p>\n<p>The moves follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/ge-healthcare-stock-to-start-trading-as-separation-from-ge-is-completed-01672832138?mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">spin-off of GE\u2019s healthcare business<\/a> as GE HealthCare Technologies Inc.<br \/>\n        <a data-track-hover=\"QuotePeek\" data-charting-symbol=\"STOCK\/US\/XNAS\/GEHC\" class=\"qt-chip positive\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/GEHC?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GEHC,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/241095876\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.21%<\/bg-quote><\/a><br \/>\n       in December 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGE shareholders do not need to take any action to receive shares of GE Vernova common stock to which they are entitled as a GE shareholder,\u201d the company said in a statement. \u201cAdditionally, shareholders do not need to pay any consideration, or surrender or exchange shares of GE common stock, to participate in the separation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those who own GE\u2019s stock as of March 19 will receive one share of GE Vernova\u2019s common stock for every four shares of GE they own. That distribution is expected to occur before the market opens on April 2, at 9:30 a.m. Eastern time.<\/p>\n<p>RBC Capital analyst Ken Herbert reiterated his outperform rating on GE\u2019s stock and raised his stock-price target to $170 from $148.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can appreciate some recent stock strength can be attributed to the pending Vernova spin (~20% of the value based on the distribution),\u201d Herbert wrote in a note to clients. \u201cHowever, considering the low leverage, strong [free cash flow] profile, potential for margin upside, and capital allocation options, we expect GE Aero to trade at a premium to [aerospace] peers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GE Vernova\u2019s stock is expected to begin trading on a when-issued basis on or around March 27, under the symbol GEV WI.
