{"id":209342,"date":"2024-03-01T16:12:45","date_gmt":"2024-03-01T16:12:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/01\/pegasus-spyware-us-court-orders-maker-to-hand-over-code-to-whatsapp\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:21:24","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:21:24","slug":"pegasus-spyware-us-court-orders-maker-to-hand-over-code-to-whatsapp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/01\/pegasus-spyware-us-court-orders-maker-to-hand-over-code-to-whatsapp\/","title":{"rendered":"Pegasus spyware: US court orders maker to hand over code to WhatsApp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Israel\u2019s NSO Group, best known for its <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/tag\/spyware\/\">spyware<\/a>, has been ordered by a U.S. court to hand over its Pegasus code to WhatsApp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the latest hurdle for the company, having been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/white-house-sounds-alarm-bells-over-israeli-surveillance-tech-acquisition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blacklisted in the U.S.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, subjected to a lawsuit by Apple, and experienced significant financial difficulties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2024\/feb\/29\/pegasus-surveillance-code-whatsapp-meta-lawsuit-nso-group\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Guardian, Judge Phyllis Hamilton reviewed NSO\u2019s request to be released from all its discovery duties in the lawsuit, citing \u201cvarious US and Israeli restrictions.\u201d Despite this, she ruled in favor of WhatsApp, mandating that NSO produce \u201call relevant spyware\u201d data spanning one year before and after the timeframe when 1,400 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/whatsapp-improves-security-with-passkey-adoption\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WhatsApp users<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were reportedly targeted by the Pegasus spyware, covering the dates from April 29, 2018, to May 10, 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSO is also required to provide WhatsApp with details about the complete capabilities of the specific spyware. However, Hamilton ruled in favor of NSO on a separate issue, deciding that the company is not obligated to reveal the identities of its customers or details about its server setup at this stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A WhatsApp spokesperson told the Guardian, \u201cThe recent court ruling is an important milestone in our long-running goal of protecting WhatsApp users against unlawful attacks. Spyware companies and other malicious actors need to understand they can be caught and will not be able to ignore the law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What are the dangers of Pegasus spyware?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pegasus is advanced spyware designed for military use, capable of infiltrating mobile phones remotely to gain complete dominance over the device. When Pegasus covertly installs itself on a phone, it can duplicate texts, images, emails, and record conversations, as well as turn on microphones and cameras for uninterrupted spying, all without the user\u2019s awareness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was developed by the cyber-arms firm and was subsequently blacklisted by the U.S. President Joe Biden\u2019s administration in 2021.
