The digital media workers were, of course, responding to a mass layoff, if not the demise of their trailblazing news site altogether.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/02\/23\/vice-media-shutting-vice-com-laying-off-several-hundred-staff\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">week<\/a> ago, the media company announced it was set to lay off hundreds of employees as it was shutting down the website and also making moves to sell Refinery 29. Coming a year after <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vice-media-bankruptcy-digital-layoffs-chapter-11-7eb3546352dc730050ef4dbe77d65c53\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">filing for bankruptcy<\/a>, Vice CEO Bruce Dixon reportedly said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/22\/media\/vice-lay-offs-stops-publishing-content-on-its-website\/index.html#:~:text=Vice%20Media%20will%20cease%20publishing,in%20a%20memo%20to%20staff.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">memo<\/a> that this was \u201cthe best past forward\u201d as \u201cwe position the company for long-term creative and financial success.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"\/>\n<p>In a video of said town hall, COO Cory Haik spoke of a \u201cvery, very, very difficult time in the macro landscape,\u201d while a river of dislike emojis flowed alongside her talking head. Dixon suddenly ended the meeting while saying that \u201cit\u2019s impossible to ignore the emojis, from my side.\u201d As he added that Vice would \u201corganize this in a way where we can actually give the information to people who want to receive it in the way it\u2019s meant,\u201d Dixon\u2019s words were met with another emoji eruption.<\/p>\n<p>After the pandemic first hit and employees began to work remotely with more frequency, virtual town halls and layoffs became <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/04\/08\/remote-layoff-era-mcdonalds-google-pepsi\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">more commonplace<\/a>. Leaked videos of strained town halls post layoffs announcements have popped up in the last couple of years, revealing discontent everywhere from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/12\/15\/washington-post-layoffs-leaked-video-town-hall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \"><em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/01\/23\/google-ceo-defends-layoff-process-in-heated-town-hall-monday.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Google<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In between the town hall and the announcement of layoffs last week, Vice employees had simply been waiting in limbo to hear their fate. One such former worker, Evy Kwong, posted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@evystadium\/video\/7340440606704962821\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">TikTok<\/a> about her agonizing two days wait to get her email only to find her name misspelled in said message. \u201cAbsolutely an apt way to just flame out of this company after the train wreck of how they did this whole thing,\u201d she said. As\u00a0 issues of poor management, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/28\/media\/news-outlets-collapse-advertisers-flock-to-social-media\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">waning investment<\/a> from advertisers, and the prioritization of <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/10\/21\/how-generative-ai-could-change-google-search-68-billion-seo-industry\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">SEO profitability<\/a> over the proliferation of actual news all collided, outlets paid the price in what made for a volatile year and an especially cold winter. Alongside Vice, <a href=\"http:\/\/o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Buzzfeed News<\/a> shut down, <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2024\/02\/killing-the-messenger-my-final-days-working-at-a-disaster.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">the Messenger<\/a> collapsed, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/message-from-business-insider-ceo-barbara-peng-2024-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Business Insider<\/a> announced layoffs. This past January alone more than 800 media jobs were cut, according to\u00a0 Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas data sent to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/91035879\/news-media-layoffs-2024-list-growing-worst-year-financial-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \"><em>Fast Company<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"\/>\n<p>And Kwong is just one of many young adults turning the camera back on companies during layoff time.
