We have seen skeletons bearing syphilis marks, classical literature dedicated to gonorrhea, and loads of royal gossip about yeast infections.\u00a0 STDs have been a subject of medical fascination and social conversation for thousands of years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Europeans are less keen on dealing with their present-day sexual health: the discourse makes it seem like all of these contagions are a thing of the past. It couldn\u2019t be further from the truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the early 2000s, our collective attention on STDs has decreased, even though epidemics are on the rise. The World Health Organization and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unaids.org\/en\/resources\/fact-sheet#:~:text=People%20living%20with%20HIV%20In,HIV%20were%20women%20and%20girls\">UNAIDS are beating the drums<\/a> because the number of people living with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/257197\/number-of-people-living-with-hiv-worldwide-since-2001\/#statisticContainer\">HIV has increased<\/a> from 26.6 million in 2000 to 39 million in 2022. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a global scale, the WHO reports that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/sexually-transmitted-infections-(stis)#:~:text=10%20July%202023%20%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B9%D8%B1%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%A9%20%E4%B8%AD%E6%96%87,chlamydia%2C%20gonorrhoea%2C%20syphilis%20and%20trichomoniasis\">more than 1 million STIs are acquired every day<\/a> worldwide, with an estimated 374 million new infections each year involving one of four curable STIs: chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and trichomoniasis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And even though treatment is available for a great number of them, it doesn\u2019t make undiagnosed ailments any less dangerous \u2013 or contagious for that matter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowledge is the first line of defense. Most crucially, knowing one\u2019s HIV status, with the available treatment options, it is possible to live a long and fulfilling life without infecting any partners \u2013 but for this, one has to be aware of being affected, and to be able to access the existing treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this episode of Standard Time we discuss sexually transmitted diseases, and the solutions to mitigate them: prevention, screening, treatments, and importantly, sexual education.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also delve into the role of community involvement, and the stigma affecting sex workers and LGBTQIA+ communities \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/selling-sex-in-the-pandemic\/\">both groups are at the forefront of finding solutions<\/a>, even though the majority of society views them as scapegoats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Danae Maragouthakis is a medical doctor and the co-founder of Yoxly, the company providing at-home STI testing. He is also the founder of an evidence-based dermatology and sexual health clinic in Budapest. This is <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. B\u00e9la Tam\u00e1si\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/tamasibeladr.hu\">clinic website and medical advise blog.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Trajche Janushev is a Program Officer at SWAN \u2013 the Sex Worker\u2019s Rights Advocacy Network. SWAN supports sex workers\u2019 rights in\u00a0 Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Their work underlines the importance of inclusivity and advocacy in addressing sexual health.
