The company\u2019s DirectSR, developed with hardware partners <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/nvidia-reveals-rtx-40-super-gpus-at-ces-2024-163041585.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Nvidia;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Nvidia<\/a>, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/amd-debuts-the-radeon-rx-7600-xt-at-ces-for-entry-level-1440p-gaming-153023517.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:AMD;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">AMD<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/intel-arc-a750-a770-review-mid-range-gpu-rivals-nvidia-amd-130032507.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Intel;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Intel<\/a>, will provide a more streamlined tunnel for developers to tap into the companies\u2019 three distinct approaches to graphical upscaling in Windows games.<\/p>\n<p>The company describes DirectSR as enabling \u201cseamless integration of Super Resolution (SR)\u201d for Windows games. \u201cDirectSR is the missing link developers have been waiting for when approaching SR integration, providing a smoother, more efficient experience that scales across hardware,\u201d Microsoft program manager Joshua Tucker <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/directx\/directx-innovation-on-display-at-gdc-2024\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:wrote;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">wrote<\/a> in a company blog post.<\/p>\n<p>Super-resolution is a technology that enhances games\u2019 visual quality without pushing the graphics card too hard. It runs games internally in a lower resolution but uses machine learning (and other tricks) to upscale the resolution of what you see on the screen. Nvidia\u2019s AI-powered DLSS <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:9;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/pcgaming\/comments\/yc8tuc\/slower_and_uglier_intel_xess_vs_nvidia_dlss_2_vs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:appears;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:9;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">appears<\/a> to perform the best but requires an Nvidia graphics card. Although it isn\u2019t confirmed that it\u2019s the same thing, it sounds like it. The setting would allow you to \u201cUse Al to make supported games play more smoothly with enhanced details.\u201d The preview version offers the choice of using a universal \/ automatic upscaling approach or a per-game one. Initially <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:11;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/2\/12\/24070426\/microsoft-windows-11-dlss-ai-super-resolution-feature\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:speculated;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:11;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">speculated<\/a> to be a rival super-resolution feature from Microsoft, it now appears \u201cAutomatic super resolution\u201d may end up as the consumer-facing version of the DirectSR API.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft says DirectSR will arrive for developers \u201csoon\u201d in a public preview build of the Agility SDK (a component of <a data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2020-03-19-microsoft-directx-12-ultimate.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:DirectX 12;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">DirectX 12<\/a>).
