Saber would then become a private company with about 3,500 employees.<\/p>\n<p>Engadget emailed a spokesperson from Saber for confirmation about the alleged buyout. The studio declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>The alleged agreement would be one of Embracer\u2019s most significant cost-cutting moves since <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/embracer-announces-layoffs-and-game-cancellations-after-a-2-billion-deal-falls-through-144311854.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:the collapse of a reported $2 billion deal;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">the collapse of a reported $2 billion deal<\/a> with a group backed by Saudi Arabia\u2019s sovereign wealth fund. Some criticized the imperiled deal as the gaming equivalent of \u201csportswashing,\u201d using popular sporting acquisitions and partnerships to boost beleaguered governments\u2019 global images. That game has already changed hands once: One of Saber\u2019s Eastern European studios <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/star-wars-knights-of-the-old-republic-remake-reportedly-switches-studios-082523737.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:took over from Aspyr Media;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">took over from Aspyr Media<\/a> in the summer of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Aspyr had reportedly already been working on the game for years before providing a demo for Lucasfilm and Sony in June 2022; a week later, Aspyr fired its design director and art director. (Reports of the <em>KOTOR<\/em> demo costing a disproportionate amount of time and money may indicate a possible reason for the fallout.) By late that summer, Saber had taken over the development of the highly anticipated \u2014 and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/bloomberg-star-wars-knights-of-the-old-republic-remake-delayed-053750869.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:indefinitely delayed;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">indefinitely delayed<\/a> \u2014 remake.<\/p>\n<p>Embracer bought Saber for $525 million in 2020 as it <a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/embracer-acquires-eidos-square-enix-montreal-and-other-studios-for-300-million-091019083.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:scooped up gaming studios left and right;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">scooped up gaming studios left and right<\/a>. It acquired at least 27 companies during that period, folding some of them (Demiurge Studios and New World Interactive) into Saber. <em>Bloomberg<\/em> reports that the deal to sell Saber to private investors includes an option to \u201cbring along multiple Embracer subsidiaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One studio that\u2019s far too big to be included in this transaction is <a data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/embracer-may-sell-borderlands-creator-gearbox-amid-financial-woes-161505145.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Borderlands developer Gearbox Entertainment;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Borderlands developer Gearbox Entertainment<\/a>. However, <em>Kotaku<\/em> <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:13;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/grand-theft-auto-6-gta-rockstar-games-return-office-1851297508\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reported;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:13;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">reported<\/a> Thursday that Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford told staff this week that a decision about the studio\u2019s future had been made.
